DAVID KIMPTON Obituary

December 19, 1939 - January 29, 2025
With heavy hearts but immense gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of our Dad, David Kimpton, a beloved husband, dad, papa, teacher, and friend to many. While we grieve his passing, we also celebrate the remarkable man he was - a born storyteller and a true character - leaving us with countless fond memories.

Born in December 1939 in Agincourt, Ontario, and raised in Cobourg, Dad's journey was one of dedication to his family and community. His childhood was not an easy one - his mother passed away when he was young, and with his father, a WWI veteran, working long hours on the railroad, much of his upbringing fell to his siblings. Despite the challenges, they shaped him into the wonderful man he became - a testament to the strength of family even in difficult circumstances. His life took a joyful turn when he caught the eye of Margaret France with his roller-skating skills. They married in 1964 and built a loving home in Thunder Bay, where they raised the two of us. Dad's playful spirit ensured there was never a dull moment, filling our childhood with laughter, adventure, and unconditional love.

Dad had a deep appreciation for learning and hard work. He began his career in telecommunications from 1958 to 1968 before graduating from Lakehead University and embarking on a long and fulfilling career as a teacher. From 1968 to 1995, he taught electronics and computer technology at Selkirk CVI and Sir Winston Churchill High School, inspiring generations of students with his knowledge, patience, and passion for learning.

Beyond the classroom, Dad was an avid cyclist and marathon runner who encouraged countless young athletes through his dedicated coaching. Another lifelong passion was amateur radio - he was an active member of the Lakehead Amateur Radio Club (VE3 AVS) and shared his interest by starting an amateur radio club at both high schools, sparking interest among students.

Many knew Dad for his love of music. As a longtime member of the Kam Valley Fiddlers, he played and preserved the rich tradition of old-time fiddle music, passing it on to young musicians. He was also a long-time member of Lakeview Presbyterian Church and its choir.

The role that brought Dad immense joy was being 'Papa' to his two grandchildren, Maya and Kaeden. They were his greatest admirers, soaking up his wisdom, humor, and curiosity. He embodied everything a child could hope for in a grandfather.

A heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (Floor 3A), including Dr. Zaib and Dr. Sellick for their compassion, and Dr. Nigro, Dr. Bhambhwani, Dr. De Bakker and Dr. Spicer for their exceptional care over the years. A special note of gratitude goes to the incredible Grandview neighbors who have been part of our family's journey for more than five decades. Your kindness, companionship, and watchful care during his daily walks meant the world to him - and to us. There are truly no better neighbors anywhere.

A celebration of his life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Charity of Your Choice would be appreciated. Dad will be deeply missed but forever remembered with love.

I have many fond memories of my neighbour Dave Kimpton.. BUT.. when I was in Grade 1, he came to sing to the students of my school in the school gymnasium, and he sang a song: "Martin and the Mulberry Bush"! ..the students howled with laughter! I'll get you back for that Dave!
Just kidding.. Dave, you were an extremely talented individual who gave greatly to our community, and I am sure that you will be very much missed by all who knew you. Very sincerely. (:

We fondly remember Mr Kimpton stopping by for a daily chat at my Mom's home on Ibbetson Street. We know that he was a good influence on so many of his students' lives and he was a great example of a life well-lived. Our sincere sympathy for your loss.

Dave was my electronics teacher at Sir Winston Churchill High School. 1989 to 1990 year. He was a great teacher he had me doing all the special projects in the class. He also had me run the Ham radio station (VE3 SWC) at the high school. He had a very good memory as he still remembered me till today. I will definitely miss him. John Oles.

My heartfelt condolences to the Kimpton family.
I will always remember Dave on his bike, stopping by for a chat in the yard when I lived in Grandview. He had great stories of biking in Ireland and excellent gardening advice. One day
I saw him playing with the Kam Valley Fiddlers at the Sweet North Bakery and thought to myself, this man can do everything! A life well lived indeed...
Wish I could have seen those roller skating skills - bet they were fancy! Dave Kimpton, you will be missed and your exuberance for life remembered and celebrated. Slainte!

One who will truly be missed by many, as one of his grandview neighbours we already feel his absence. Visits with "Mr.K" were something my kids (and us) looked forward to every evening. Every encounter was special and he would always thank us for taking the time and visiting. My kids would run outside to greet him as his green jacket made him easy to spot through our windows. Really enjoyed reading more about his early years and wanted to share he was a very special part of our grandview community. He will be missed and remembered.

My condolences to Mr. Kimpton's family, we moved into Grandview 10 years ago, my husband had him as a teacher, we would often stop and chat if we ran into him on a walk, was always friendly and greeted everyone on his walks. His friendly smile will be missed around the neighbourhood.

Aww! Grant Turner here. Your dad worked with my mom and dad. I just never thought about or visualized your dad passing away. I only see him teaching in a classroom beside dad at Selkirk, or playing guitar with Kam Valley Fiddlers, or running the 10 mile, or biking all over town. I ventured over to his Church once I believe a way back where he was likely singing in the choir. A glass half full guy for sure in every area of his life. Age 85! I last saw him in his 70's I guess. Health seemed fine and it was just business as usual for him at that time. My condolences to you all. I am saddened of his passing!

So many memories of Dave Kimpton - cross country skiing, Kam Valley Fiddler's, playing spoons for our son when he was a baby, out on his bike all over town. Lovely man with great family.

I remember Dave from my occasional involvement at Lakeview Presbyterian Church, and from concerts with the Kam Valley Fiddlers. His infectious smile always gladdened my own heart. He will be missed.

My deepest condolences on the loss of your dad.
I had the good fortune to have been one of Dave's early students at Selkirk. He was an engaging teacher who was able to reach out to everyone in the class.
Years later, when I took up distance running, I was happy to be able to connect with him again. He was always positive and happy to stop and chat. Through my work at Parks & Rec, I got to enjoy Dave and the Kam Valley Fiddlers at different community events.
He made a difference in many people's lives and will be missed by folks in many different circles.
