David Schmidt Obituary

1960 ~ 2021
It is with profound sadness that the family of David Schmidt announce his peaceful passing at the age of 61 years.  Dave is survived by his spouse Lynne Schmidt (née Fitzpatrick), son Patrick (Mélodie), grandson Finley, and mother Dorothy Riemer (formerly Schmidt, née Priebe). Dave is also survived by his siblings Joanne Ferguson (Bob), Don (Theresa), Cathy Braidek (Alan), Tom (Sharon), Rita (Jack Adams), and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father, Donald.  Dave was born and raised in Saskatoon. He graduated from Holy Cross High School in 1978 and went on to become a millwright in northern Manitoba. This is where he met his wife of 36 years, Lynne, in The Pas. Dave moved to Marathon, Ontario in 1986 to work at what became the Barrick Hemlo Mine. He started a family in Marathon and stayed until he passed. Dave returned to school in his 40s to obtain a Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma from S.A.I.T. Senior Project Manager and Superintendent of Maintenance were among the many titles he held throughout his 32 years at Hemlo. He loved his job and coworkers, and was keenly invested in the longevity of the mine.  Outside of work, Dave could be found laughing around campfires at White Lake, casting a line from his boat, unwinding at moose camp, walking his rambunctious dog Tazz, working on house projects with his son, or relaxing alongside his loving wife. He endeared many people throughout his life with a rascally sense of humour, knack for giving nicknames, and his magnetism to mischief. In Dave's last months he was happiest next to the light of his life, his grandson Finley. Dave's Celebration of Life will be held during the summer of 2022. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Northern Cancer Fund – Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation. He courageously lived with cancer for the last three and a half years of his life, and was grateful for the availability of care in northern Ontario.  The family wishes to send a special thank you to Cathy and Alan Braidek, Paul and Wilma Bazinet, Rick and Regine Tessier, Dr. Ryan Patchett-Marble, the staff of the Tamarack House, and the Timmins Home Care Team. The funeral arrangements are entrusted with the MIRON-WILSON FUNERAL HOME, 150 BALSAM ST. S, TIMMINS, ON.

He was a man of logic and perseverance.
