Dean Larsen Obituary

DEAN LARSEN
It is with overwhelming sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Dean Larsen (aka “The Legend”), born on March 1, 1960, a resident of Thunder Bay/Upsala, at the age of 63. Dean passed away peacefully at home, with family and friends by his side on March 20, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer.

At the age of 25, Dean started his career as a Wrap Line Operator with Great Lakes Forest Products (later named Resolute Forest Products) in the finishing/shipping department. He was committed to Great Lakes/Resolute, having served 38 years with the company, until his retirement in 2015. Dean welcomed retirement, it provided him with the freedom to embrace his love of the outdoors and enabled him to move to Upsala, with his life partner of 25 years, Mary Jane (MJ) where they could live out their dream together running their bunkhouse, guiding and being closer to the family camp. For the last 15 years, Dean and Mary Jane called Upsala home.

In recent months, as his health began to deteriorate, his dedicated partner, Mary Jane looked after him with such love and devotion. He was lucky to have her and she was lucky to have him. Their bond and love was like no other.

Dean had a smile that could brighten the darkest of days, an infectious laugh that you knew was from deep in his belly, was extremely kind and humble. He was always there for people, accepting and open, willing to help, without wanting or expecting anything in return. Dean was a family man, he taught each of his children and grandchildren how to fish and shared his love for the outdoors with them. Dean looked forward to summers at the family camp, spending countless weekends sitting around the campfire, or spending time in his beloved sauna. Dean loved the Winnipeg Jets; he was a huge race fan, an avid hunter, guide, and fisherman and was a member of the Northwestern Ontario Sportsmen's Alliance.

Dean is survived by his loving partner, Mary Jane Lacosse; Children: Vicky and Gord Woodbeck, Bob and Chantal Kemp; Grandchildren: Travis (Kiera) Woodbeck, Trenton (Rachel) Woodbeck, Tyra (Cam) Woodbeck, Ivy Kemp, Maxime Kemp, Zoe Kemp; Great-Grandchildren: Kaliyah and Hazel; lifetime family friends Kirk and Tracey Brady, as well as many more loving friends. Dean will be greatly missed, but we find comfort in knowing he is now at peace and no longer in pain.

Respecting Dean's wishes, cremation has taken place and the family will hold a private ceremony, planting a cedar tree in his honour, at a later date. A Celebration of Life Luncheon will take place in Upsala, Ontario at the Community Centre, 20 Community Hall Road on April 1, 2023, at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation Northern Cancer Fund.

This is not goodbye, this is not the end,
Love you always and forever, until we meet again.
