Declan Barry Obituary
Declan M. Barry Ph.D. , P.Eng.Dr. Declan Barry died peacefully in the early hours of Friday, March 30, 2001, with his loving wife and friends by his side. Declan was born in Cork, Ireland, in 1946 and received his education at Presentation Brothers College and the University College Cork - National University of Ireland. He left Cork to accept a post-doctoral fellowship at Cambridge University in England. He then moved to Exeter to work with English Electric as a Senior Design Engineer developing new satellite communications technology. Wanting to make better use of his education and industrial experience, Declan moved into academia and accepted a position with the Department of Industrial Technology at the University of Bradford in England. Lakehead University was fortunate to have attracted Declan to its Faculty of Engineering in 1980, where he served the university and the students admirably until his retirement in September 2000. Declan valued highly his dual role as engineer and professor. He made every effort to convey a sense of ethics and history in all that he taught, to the great appreciation of his former students. Declan was an extremely intelligent, knowledgeable man, but, far more importantly, he was a kind, honest, and generous soul who had diverse interests and talents. He was the President of the Cambrian Players for two years and participated in many productions as both actor and director. He also worked professionally for Magnus Theatre, having possessed an absolutely classic Shakespearean voice. Declan will be sadly and forever missed by his wife, Nanci MacIvor; his children, Amy Kate and Fergus (of Bingley, England); and his brother, Aidan, and Aidan's family (of New Hampshire). Declan is survived by his mother, Tess (of Cork, Ireland), and was predeceased by his father, Cornelius, and his favourite uncle, Bartholomew Britton. A service in memory and celebration of Declan's life will take place at the Blake Funeral Chapel on Monday, April 2, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.A tree will be planted in memory of Declan Barry in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday June 23, 2002."
