With heavy hearts, we say good-bye to Derek at aged 43. Dear son to Reiner and Ellen, sister to Cheryl, brother-in-law to Kostas and uncle, who fiercely loved his nephew Oliver, and nieces Sophie and Emma. Always a complicated person, Derek had a softness, sense of humour and sense of justice; all of which he showed the world in certain situations. Derek always stood "for the little guy" and that determination will always be admired. Cancer sucks. And it's ugly. Derek's cancer was very complicated. We miss him so much. Be we're thankful that his pain is now over. Our son, brother, brother-in-law and favourite uncle. The family will have a private service at a later time. Friends are welcome to join together at a Celebration of Life being held at the North End Community Centre, 954 Huron Ave., 5:30 - 8 pm on Friday, April 27, 2018. Casual dress. Donations to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences, Northern Cancer Fund would be appreciated.

Long time loyal customer at Napa Auto Parts on Dawson Road. His quick wit and personality will be sorely missed, but we are glad his pain is over.

Derek was such an amazing person and will be forever missed. I will always treasure the notes we would write back and forth while he was trucking years ago, meeting for coffee at Santorelli's and Robin's on Arthur street and the many serious and lighthearted discussions we would have while 4xing in his lifted blue truck with my Rottweiler! We may not have spoken often over the last 10 years or so but things always fell right back into place the second we did and this world will not be the same knowing he isn't in it. I am so glad he isn't suffering anymore however because he always deserved better than all the bad stuff that happened to him.Rest easy now my friend until I see you again.❤
