June 22, 1958 - December 21, 2024 (66yrs)
It is with great sadness that his family announces the passing of Domenic D'Uva. Domenic passed away at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with his heart-broken wife, Rosi (nee: Scheibler), by his side.
Domenic was born in Castelpetroso, Campobasso, Italy to Nicola and Angiolina D'Uva. He was welcomed by his older brother, Tony, and his sister, Julia. His younger sister, Maria, would join the family several years later in Canada.
At the tender age of 2, Domenic and his family set sail for Canada; his parents in search of a better life. He was the only one in the family not to get seasick during the days-long voyage and enjoyed scampering around the ship. This young family landed at Pier 1 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Being sponsored by his aunt and uncle in Fort William, the D'Uva family settled in with them and their cousins. Once his parents could afford their own home they moved to Centre Avenue.
Domenic attended Heath Park School and then Westgate for high school, where he was great with math and technology, made the Honour Roll every year, and enjoyed playing football. Much of his childhood and teenage years were spent outdoors at Wayland Park playing games and sports until sunset and it was time to go home. He particularly enjoyed baseball, soccer, riding his bike around the neighbourhood, and in winter months skating and playing hockey. Domenic attended Con College for Avionics while working part-time at Great Lakes Forest Products as well as other part-time jobs. After graduation he was offered a job in Toronto. He chose to remain closer to home and his family in Thunder Bay. He took a full-time job at Great Lakes Forest Products in 1978 and accepted the company plan to obtain an additional diploma in Instrumentation Technology. In 1981, he returned from his training and worked as an Instrumentation Mechanic until his retirement at age 57.
At the age of 28, Domenic was diagnosed with cancer and with the care of a great oncologist and the love and support of his parents and siblings, Domenic made a full recovery. He carried on with his life plans and bought his first home in Port Arthur.
At 33, Domenic met his future wife, Rosi (née Scheibler), whom he married in 1997. They had three beautiful children: Hannah born in 2003 and Sophia & Nicholas in 2005.
Domenic loved married life and he loved being a dad. He enjoyed living a typical family life raising his children, chauffeuring them to their activities, riding bikes with them, kicking a ball around, playing catch, and shooting hoops, camping, and showing his children Canada from coast to coast. His wife and children will especially miss his Friday night homemade pizza and snuggling on the couch watching a movie.
Most recently Dom was enjoying his retirement relaxing at his country home outside of Thunder Bay, helping his children with their moves to university, Facetiming them when they ran into "technical" problem in their apartment (eg. plugged toilet!) or helping them with their car. He loved meeting up with his retired colleagues for their regular "breakfast with the boys". He and Rosi were slowly adjusting to an empty home: walking their property with their dog, Maggie, enjoying slow mornings with tea and toast, gardening, taking short trips, and sharing quiet moments together.
Domenic had integrity, loyalty, and a deep love for his family and close friends. His gentle and quiet spirit drew others near to him.
Domenic will be terribly missed every day by his wife of 27 years, Rosi, his children Hannah (21y), Sophia & Nicholas (19y), his sisters Julia (Jim), and Marie (Keith), and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Domenic was predeceased by his parents Nicola and Angiolina, and his brother, Tony.
The family wishes to express special thanks to the nurses on 1A and the ICU nurses Jocelyn & Lindsay for their amazing care of Domenic.
Funeral services for Domenic will be held on Friday, December 27th 3:00pm at the Westfort Chapel (420 Gore St. West at James, Thunder Bay). Visitation will be held one hour prior. The interment will be on Monday, December 30th at St. Patrick's Cemetery on Broadway Avenue at 1:00pm.
If you wish, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Sick Kids hospital in Toronto in Domenic's name.
