07 September 1937 ~ 25 January 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather,
Donald Morgan Everts, at the age of 88.
Born in Port Arthur on September 07 1937, Donald passed away peacefully on January 25th with family by his side.
Don will be remembered as a kind and warm man who dedicated his life to helping others. He was very hard working and had quiet strength. He found joy in working with his hands. The many projects he completed for his family and friends and the structures that will stand for years to come are a testament to his skills and attention to detail. He was truly a "jack of all trades" "firefighter moonlighter". In his younger years, he also enjoyed the outdoors camping, fishing, and golfing. Above all, his greatest passion was caring for his wife and family and spending quiet time with them.
Having become the man of the house at an early age, Don worked a variety of jobs throughout his life, including Co-Op Dairy, John Deere, and Lakehead Freightways, roles he often spoke of fondly. His final career began when he joined the Port Arthur Fire Dept in 1963, serving in the Ambulance Section. Following the Cities' amalgamation, he became a firefighter with the newly formed Thunder Bay Fire Rescue and retired in 1993 after 30 years of dedicated service. Never one to be idle after retirement, Don continued serving his community as a school crossing guard with the City of Thunder Bay for over 20 years, devoted to the safety of local children, a position he really enjoyed. In retirement, he also cherished time with family and happily spent hours puttering in his workshop.
Don is lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Gwen Everts; his son, Don Jr. (Debra) Everts and daughters Brenda Everts, Kerry (Jeff) Hansen, and Shelley (Stephen) Harris. He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, Donovan(Raven), Ethan(Taylor), and Amy Everts; Joel(Pippa), Erin(Brett), and Tara Hansen; Brandon(Greg), Reilly(Jordana), Josh(Karissa), and Paige(Justin) Harris; and Kim(Mike) and Kelly(Billy) Viheriasalo; great-grandchildren Kaiden, Easton and baby boy Glena, expected in April; sisters-in-law Robertta (Veikko) and Isobel Oliver; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was deeply proud of them all and treasured each visit.
He was predeceased by his parents, William and Winnifred Everts; his brother, Gary Everts; sister-in-law Dawn Everts; in-laws Bruce and Isobel Gordon; brother-in-law James Oliver; son-in-law Glen Viheriasalo and many extended family members, friends and colleagues, all of whom he missed dearly.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the medical staff at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, Wesway, VON and Ontario Health at Home for their compassionate care over the past months. We are also grateful to all who have reached out with condolences and kindness during this difficult time. Don's great love for his wife and family will remain his lasting legacy. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered in our hearts. His stories of his life will live on.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be announced in the spring.
