Donald Modin Obituary

On December 26, 2022, Donald (Don) Michael Modin, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 77 years after a courageous battle with cancer. Born September 14, 1945, Don spent his childhood living with his family in Thunder Bay. A voracious reader, Don earned his degree in education in 1965 before relocating to Dorion. He spent 33 years teaching, primarily at the Dorion Elementary Public School, before retiring in 1998.

Don had a love of cars, particularly hot rods. He helped start the Northern Lights Car Club and served as the President for 25 years, organizing cruise nights and car shows for those that loved to drive fast and listen to the rumble of an engine.

Don was best known for his dry sense of humour and kind spirit, making jokes until the very end.

He will be forever missed by his wife of 50 years, Valerie Modin, and their children Michael (Brandy), Ian (Teresa), and Amber (Nick). He is also survived by nine grandchildren that adored their Papa – Aydin, Wyatt, Nathan, Jaxson, Abbigail, Grace, Cohen, Sloane and Simon. He will also be deeply missed by Joey, Skylar, Patrick, Leonard, and Josh. Don leaves behind his sister Valerie, brother Wally, sister-in-law Terry, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his parents, Zelma and Walter, brother David, brother-in-law Gordon as well as his father-in-law Maurice and mother-in-law Peggy.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will take place at a later date in the Summer so that Don is able to take a final ride in his hot rod. Should friends desire, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or another Charity of Your Choice would be greatly appreciated.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.

So sorry to hear about Don´s (Mr. Modin) passing. I have very fond memories from being in his class at Dorion School. Teachers shape their students future and Mr. Modin was a positive influence in many children´s lives.
Blessings to all who loved one of my favourite teachers.

Val and Family,
We are so saddened to read of Don's passing. I was lucky to have him for my grade 7 teacher in Red Rock when us Dorion kids were bussed there. Dry sense of humor for sure and the patience of a saint especially with Sonja when he drove her high school bus in his "second" career driving.
Peace to you all

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. May you find peace in God and joy in your memories.
I was just sitting and thinking gee I attended Dorion Public for jk threw seven and I never had him for a teacher but I did have him for drivers Ed, poor man stuck in a car with three girls all the way to tbay and back. Always gave me a ride home at the end of class or time out on the road, a lot of great memories of public school that always include the best teachers and staff ever.
Thinking of you all

I remember looking forward to Mr. Modin´s class as a grade four at DPS. Unfortunately our family moved to town before that happened. Thirty three years teaching is quite the accomplishment! My condolences to the whole family and fellow students.
