January 5, 1952 ~ December 31, 2025
It is with profound sadness that the family of Don Moir announce his unexpected passing just days before his 74th birthday. Don was born in 1952, the eldest son of Fred Sr. and Mary Moir. He attended Balsam Public School and Hillcrest High School. He started working at Dominion Stores and then went to Sault Ste. Marie College to study art. He ended up returning to the grocery business by working for A&P and then Safeway. He finished his working career at FRP Manufacturing. Don self-taught himself to play guitar at an early age which eventually led him to join local musical groups including the Jolly Ramblers and Reflections which played at various venues in Thunder Bay. He was also a former member of the Fort William Male Choir. Don was predeceased by his father, Fred Sr., his older sister, Irene and his younger brother Fred Jr. as well as brother-in-law and good friend Terry. He is survived by his Mom, Mary, brothers Gord (Gislaine), David (Jackie), Douglas and sister Anita. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces and grandnephews and grandnieces who will miss his "dad" jokes and fun loving nature. He greatly enjoyed spending time with niece Samantha and her family, always one to enjoy the fellowship, great meals and games. It was typical for Don to play army games with the boys and Barbies with his special great niece Kaitlyn. They shared a special bond and he often commented on how his life would have been so much more enriched if he had a daughter like her. He would often say how special and talented Samantha's children (Kristin, Colton, Kaitlyn, and Cameron) were and what a wonderful mother Samantha was to them. Don would often mention how much he enjoyed his friendship with Tim whom he met over 30 years ago. The loss of family members had been very hard on Don. He recently found peace in connecting with cousin Leo and together they would spend their time studying the Bible which led to getting baptized early this year, as one of Jehovah's Witnesses.
On Saturday, January 24th, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., a service for Don will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses located at 1034 Oliver Road with David Alander officiating. Those wishing to view virtually can connect by Zoom ID 85443667724. Password is: Unified. Refreshments to follow.
The family will also be hosting an informal Celebration of Life for Don in the summer when family and friends from out-of-town will be able to travel in better weather conditions. An announcement will be forthcoming closer to the time of this event. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, a donation to the Centre for Complex Diabetes Care (Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre), Diabetes Health (St. Joseph's Care Group) or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
