DONALD NICHOLS Obituary

June 23, 1950 ~ May 14, 2025
With heavy hearts and deep sadness, the family of Donald Joseph Nichols announce his passing on May 14, 2025 at the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital. After years of health struggles, Don peacefully passed on at 74 years of age, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on June 23, 1950, Don was the third of eight children. A hard worker from the very beginning, he spent his life excelling at everything he tried. He was an accomplished woodworker, could fix anything (it wasn't broken 'til Dad couldn't fix it!), and thrived as both an auto and heavy equipment mechanic. He began earning a pay cheque as a teenage boy working in bush camps, auto mechanics and eventually a lengthy career as a heavy equipment mechanic at the Red Rock Mill. But his true passion came when he began his own business, Don Nichols Contracting. From septic system installations to lot development, Don did it all. There wasn't a machine he couldn't operate and his skills were legendary.

Don spent most of his adult life in Hurkett, Ontario and the roots he planted there ran deep. From raising his children to helping his neighbors, Hurkett was home. He loved his community and those who shared his lifetime of memories on the Hurkett Loop and beyond. His absence will leave a void that can never be filled.

Don will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by his two children Don (Jason) and Shawna (Steve); four grandsons Hudson, Walker, Callum and Ben; brothers Conward (Maureen), Ronald (Ana) and Lonnie (Viola) and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Joe and Gladys; brothers Jim and Rick and sisters Jo Ann and Jeannie.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at the Hurkett Community Centre, #110 Hwy 582. A private interment at the Hurkett United Cemetery will follow.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Don's memory to the Hurkett Community Centre.

Until we meet again, we hold you in our hearts.
