It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donna Mae Mikkonen (Luoma) at age 86 on December 16, 2025 at TBRHSC.
Donna Mae was born at Little Longlac Hospital in Geraldton, ON to Charlie and Helen Luoma. As a child she grew up in a small Finnish community they called "Peckerville". She later moved to town and was on her own at 17yrs of age. She worked at Chapples for 8 yrs. During this time she met the love of her life, Mauri Mikkonen. They married in 1962 and had two children. As an avid reader, she found her dream job in 1974 at the Geraldton Public Library where she became head librarian until she retired 28 yrs later.
Donna Mae was very involved with the Lutheran church and catered many events with her "Church Girls". Every summer was spent at Wildgoose Lake camp entertaining family and friends. After becoming a widow in 1997 her grandchildren became her lifesavers, whom she adored.
She was the most compassionate and generous person anyone could meet. Everyone she met always said how wonderful she was even up to the end. She was very social and loved to be on the go. Donna Mae was always quick to tell you how much she loved you and appreciated you.
Donna Mae is survived by her son Kevin, daughter Carrie, son-in-law Roger Gagne, grandchildren Kelsey and Troy, sister Jeannie Buck, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband, parents, and her brother Danny.
As per her wishes there will be no funeral but family and friends are welcome to come celebrate her on the 3rd of January, 2026 at her daughter's house between 2-4pm.
Family would like to thank the hospital staff for her wonderful care.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
