It is with great sadness that we announce that Dorothy Rose Christy (née Peachey) of Thunder Bay passed away peacefully on December 29, 2018. Dorothy was 89 years old, having been born November 9, 1929 in Fort Frances, Ontario. She, her parents and two sisters later moved to Port Arthur where she completed her high school education at PACI. Dorothy and her family then moved to Saskatoon where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in French and Latin at the University of Saskatchewan. Following graduation, she pursued education studies at the Ontario College of Education (OCE) in Toronto. She then took on a teaching position in Hamilton. After her marriage in 1956 to Peter, who at the time was pursuing business studies at Western, she moved to London, ON to teach. The couple later moved back to Port Arthur for work and to raise a family. Together they raised 3 children. During her career with Lakehead Public Schools, Dorothy taught at the primary level, primarily at Balsam Street School where she had a tremendous impact on the development of young minds. Her students meant the world to her. Dorothy was an expert at multi-tasking. While teaching, she pursued additional studies, including a Bachelor of Education, a Masters of Education in Educational Administration, and several Special Education and Supervisory Specialist Certificates, all from Lakehead University, receiving first class standing in all of her work. In the latter part of her career, she worked extensively with the Special Education Zone Support Team. Following retirement, Dorothy completed several assignments with the Ministry of Education and the then Department of Indian and Northern Affairs, flying North to several reserves to support students and teachers. Dorothy was happiest when she was relaxing with her family at camp on Shebandowan Lake every summer since 1965. She enjoyed travel, having been to Europe on several occasions. She and Peter spent many winters in Naples, Florida over the years. Dot and Pete made quite the team. Dorothy very much imparted her love, her work ethic, her spontaneity, her humour, and her love of reading to her children and grandchildren. She couldn't have been a better wife, mother and grandmother. Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Peter Christy, of 122-1200 Jasper Drive, her daughter Lynne Seaman of Calgary, son Jack Christy (Larry Adams) of Thunder Bay, and daughter Lorraine Christy (Steve Lankin) also of Thunder Bay. Dorothy leaves behind her precious grandchildren: Jaime Seaman, Margot Seaman, and Peter Lankin. Dorothy is also survived by her sisters Jane Peachey and Peg Chase, and her nephew Ken Chase and niece Carol Chase, all of Thunder Bay. She was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Jessie Peachey, her in-laws, Jack and Ola Christy, and her brother-in-law Don Chase. Dorothy was an intelligent, beautiful, loving, kind and sweet woman with a radiant smile and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. In recent years, Dorothy received kind and attentive support from the staff, first of Jasper Place and later of Pioneer Ridge. The entire Christy family thanks all who played a part in her care. Her memory will live on in the hearts and minds of her family and all others who loved her. Interment of her ashes will be in the family plot at Mountain View Cemetery in a private ceremony at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations to Lakehead Public Schools for a memorial scholarship in her name - For the love of education. I met Dorothy once at Ola and Jack's house on Peter St. when I was 10 or 11 - she was drawing a picture in pencil for her classroom - I thought she was very pretty and a wonderful artist.
My father was Earl Wallace, Jack Christy's half-brother. I'd love to get in touch with Dorothy's son Jack to share family memories.

Mrs Christy was a teacher of mine at Balsam School. While the lessons learned may have faded, thoughts of her and her love of teaching still bring a smile, even after 40 plus years.

The last couple of days I have been thinking about Dorothy and I am always seeing her big smile and hearing her calm soft voice.
She will always be remembered and loved by more individuals than we could ever realize, all of her students she taught over her teaching years. Many have told me over the years how Dorothy helped them emotionally and mentally going beyond her job requirements.
My thoughts are with the whole family at this time especially Peter.
I will always miss my Aunt Dorothy
Love always "her favourite niece" (her only niece) Carol

Our condolences to all the Christy Family at this difficult time. My fondest memory of Mrs Christy is walking or biking with my girls when they were young past her home as we lived on the same street and her stoping what she was doing out front to say hi to them with that Wonderful smile she had and soft spoken greeting for my girls, asking them how they were and what they were doing for the summer with me then looking at me with that same smile saying how wonderful they looked and asking me how I was. Great memory. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Danny, Charmaine, Danielle, and Graysen Thompson.
