Also survived by his daughter Susan Ahola (Ron), son Jeff Baxendale (Yvonne), brother Lorne Baxendale (Rosalie) his many grandchildren, their children and families. In the early 1960's when I was 14, I started working at the Baxendale Bros garage in Murillo. Doug's uncle Ernie, who co-owned the garage with Doug's dad Bob, was my uncle too. Ernie would pick me up in Fort William on Saturday mornings and take me with him to the garage in Murillo where I would help out; pump gas, fix flats, change oil. I bought an old motorcycle. Ernie let me keep it at the garage and helped me repair it over many many months. When it came time to start it I was struggling with the high compression engine, kick starting with a compression release and spark advance - way more than I could manage. Well Doug and a few of the lads were working on a race-car that day in the garage; tuning the engine, reving with straight headers, really hard core. Doug was about twice my age then and had a real presence when he was in the garage. He was a real car guy. Doug came over and asked if I needed some help. He called over the boys and soon there were four of us holding the old bike, working the controls and kicking it over. When the bike started for the first time it blew the baffle out the exhaust and it hit the wall across the garage for which I got a big smile and atta-boy from Doug.
