Douglas O'Connor Obituary

Mr. Douglas Patrick O'Connor, age 59 years, resident of Thunder Bay, passed away unexpectedly at Silver Mountain, Ontario on June 1, 2017. Doug was born in Port Arthur on October 27, 1957 to Dennis and Velma O'Connor. He was raised in Port Arthur, and attended St. Margaret's School and Hillcrest High School. Doug often spoke of early childhood memories with his family: planting gardens and hunting at Silver Mountain where his dad was born and raised, and fishing at Sioux Lookout where his mom was born and raised. He was employed as an equipment operator with Thunder Bay Hydro for twenty-five years, until his worsening Muscular Dystrophy forced him to shift gears. Spending more time at home was anything but boring. He found new and enjoyable ways to spend his time, and became the head cook, baker, and maintenance man. His chili, soups, fried fish, and banana bread were favourites among his family and friends. Doug enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, watching his favourite action movies, and spending time with his family. He was often found driving around on his red golf cart and working on various mechanical and construction projects. He was passionate about helping others, and spent many years on the board of Aurora Lutheran Bible Camp. He was also dedicated to serving on the Lappe Lutheran Church council as Chairman. Doug became a friend to everyone he met, and was a bright ray of sunshine in the lives of his friends and family. He was a strong, kind, and caring man whose influence and impact will never be forgotten. His determination saw him achieve many goals in spite of his illness. He will be dearly missed. Doug is survived by his loving wife of 25 years Wendy; his children Alana, Julia, and Westin; his mother Velma; sisters Cathy (Vince) Desando, Terri O'Connor, and Gayle (Tim) Stewart; brother-in-law Rod Wilen; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He will also be missed by his four-legged friend Phoebe. He was predeceased by his father Dennis, brother Denny, parents-in-law Allan and Helen Wilen, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and his special fishing buddy, cousin Rob. Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at Lappe Lutheran Church with Pastor Neil Otke officiating. Interment will be held at a later date at Lappe Cemetery. If desired, donations can be made to Muscular Dystrophy Canada (www.muscle.ca) or a charity of your choice.

To the O'Connor Sisters
My sincere condolences to you both about Doug and Dennis. I knew them both as we grew up back in Tbay.
They both died too young.
