DUNCAN CAMERON Obituary
CAMERON February 26, 1941 - January 5, 2026
Duncan Alexander (Sandy) Cameron passed away peacefully at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, surrounded by his family on January 5, 2026.
Sandy was born on February 26, 1941, in Fort William, Ontario to Myrtle (nee: Browning) and Henry Cameron. He was the baby of the family and was declared the "most beautiful baby" in Fort William in a 1941 contest. He often joked that it was downhill from there.
He grew up in Westfort and attended Selkirk High School, leaving school in 1958 to seek a career with Crown Zellerback Paper Company. He later sought employment in construction and remained working out of the Laborers International Union until health issues required that he leave this physical work.
As a young man Sandy enjoyed a party lifestyle, dancing (winning contests!), and later bar fighting and excessive drinking. His problematic drinking lifestyle led him to admit defeat, and he stopped drinking alcohol in September 1974. He remained sober for his lifetime.
In 1976 he married Judy (nee: Brisson) and enjoyed a life of celebration at their newfound sobriety with many friends gathered around, drinking gallons of coffee and telling stories.
Sandy was a voracious reader, had a great sense of humour, and told stories to everyone he met. He also worked with other alcoholics and shared with them how he found his way out of a living hell on earth to a life filled with joy and peace. He kept his mind and body active for most of his life, exercising daily, and was often seen around Thunder Bay enjoying his long walks.
The absolute pride and joy of his life came in the form of his beautiful daughter Heather Jean Cameron in November of 1982. His love and devotion to her was immeasurable. He was over the moon to become "Papa" to his two grandchildren Jacob and Daniel and lovingly welcomed his son-in-law Tyler Koval into his world. He was a devoted grandparent to his boys, spending countless hours playing with toy cars and Legos, taking them to parks, even accompanying them on daycare field trips. In his later years, as his health declined, he remained an ever-present grandfather, never missing a birthday or holiday and enjoying every moment he could with his grandsons.
He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers (Albert and James) and one sister (Jean Helget), their spouses, a niece and two nephews. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews as well as many great or great-great nieces and nephews, many in Thunder Bay, and spread across Canada.
Left behind to mourn and remember are his daughter Heather, son-in-law Tyler and Tyler's mother Laurie Koval, grandchildren Jacob and Daniel, and Judy Cameron, his ex-wife and friend.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Thursday, January 15, 2026 at 12:00pm in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, with refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital Health Sciences Foundation.
