EDWARD CHANG Obituary

Edward Lung Chang was born on February 28, 1947 and welcomed into the world by his parents, Lily and Lung Chang, in Vancouver, BC. His early years were spent in Hong Kong, where he learned Kung Fu and to speak English with a British accent. Ed returned to Vancouver for high school, where he excelled in football and weight lifting, and he learned to speak English with a Canadian accent. After high school, Ed worked in an eclectic variety of jobs, including taxi driver, night club bouncer, and bank teller. A blind date led him to meet Judith Jacob, an English major at Simon Fraser University, and the love of his life. Ed and Judy were quickly married and they supported each other in their post-secondary educations at Simon Fraser and UBC. After graduation, they moved to Burlington, Ontario, where Ed specialized in forensic accounting. He developed expertise auditing Psychiatric hospitals across Ontario. This led him to become the Director of Finance at Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital in Thunder Bay, where Ed worked for approximately 20 years. In Thunder Bay, Ed enjoyed playing golf, table tennis, and billiards. He was a longstanding president of the Thunder Bay Chinese Canadian Association and performer of the Lion Dance at Chinese New Year and Folklore Festival celebrations. Ed was a devoted and proud father to Dr. Michael Chang and Mary Chang, B.Ed, MSc. In his retirement, Ed was a dedicated caregiver to his mother-in-law, his grandsons, and his wife. He will be deeply missed by his family, including his daughter-in-law, Claire Littleton, his grandsons, Oscar, Isaac, and Duncan Chang and his two cats, Manny and Ziggy. Our family would like to thank the excellent staff at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and St Joseph's Hospital for their care of Ed, who passed away on March 14, 2025. A private Celebration of Life will be held for family and close friends at a later date. Those wishing to make a donation in Ed's honour are encouraged to consider charities that benefit children, animals, or those in poverty.

The Lion Dance with Ed

Jeanetty Jumah

April 13, 2025

Ed Chang was a dedicated and hardworking member of the Thunder Bay Multicultural Association for many years representing the Thunder Bay Chinese-Canadian Association. He was a real asset to TBMA as it grew into the organization it is today. I recall many meetings with Ed where we not only benefited from his expertise but also had the chance to enjoy his good company. Many Folklore Festivals saw Ed proudly performing the traditional Chinese Lion Dance on stage and I personally remember his willingness to step up whenever his support was needed. He championed not only the rich traditions of his Chinese culture but helped develop TBMA into the caring effective organization it is today. TBMA was very fortunate to have Ed on our Board and I was fortunate to speak with him by phone late last year. I personally valued the advice he always and willingly shared with me. My sympathy to Mary, Michael and his whole family. Thank you for sharing Ed with us for so many years. TBMA is the organization it is today because of Ed's hard work, ideas, and dedication. A great man has moved on and we recognized the positive impact he had on the development & role of TBMA and of course, Folklore Festival. Jeanetty Jumah, President, TBMA and a friend who valued Ed
