With profound sadness, but gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of our wonderful mother and grandmother, Elaine Sprovieri, 90, of Thunder Bay. She passed away peacefully, at home, on December 25, 2016 with family by her side. Elaine was born May 7, 1926 in Rosslyn Village, the youngest child of Ukrainian immigrant parents Dora and George Nastazuk. She grew up in Rosslyn where many wonderful memories and lifelong friendships were formed. In the latter stages of her disease she always wanted to go home to Rosslyn; it held a special place in her heart. She and her husband Tony, gardened there for many years; she cherished her roots and kept in touch with the families she grew up with, often stating there was no better place on earth than Rosslyn. In 1948 she married Anthony Sprovieri, sharing over 67 fun years together before his passing in November, 2015. She worked for over 25 years at Bev Porter's Sportswear Ltd. for Eunice and Bev Porter and later Jane and David Glover. Friendships, church, volunteering and family were important to Elaine. She was a long time parishioner of Corpus Christi Church and an active member of Corpus Christi CWL and St. Joseph's Auxiliary for over 60 years. She enjoyed people and had a wide circle of friends: her extended family, her bridge club of over 50 years, her Corpus Christi skiing/walking/canasta ladies, her McKibbon Street lunch bunch, her longtime friends that she wintered with in Florida and the many friends that she and Tony shared concerts, dinners, parties and trips with. She was devoted to her husband and a shining light in our family. Her presence, support and love will be truly missed. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Tony, father and mother-in-law Francesco and Teresina Sprovieri, sister and brother-in-law Mary and Mac Panchuk (Detroit), sister and brother-in-law Lillian and John Bayko, brother and sister-in-law William and Helen Chepesky, brother-in-law Rudy Sprovieri (Louise), sister-in-law and brother-in-law Norma and Louie Nistico, sister-in-law Anne Laine (Libby), special cousins-in-law Carlo Sprovieri (Hazel) and Joe Cizmar (Mary) and many extended family members. She is survived by her children Ken and Mark Sprovieri and Teri Groulx and her grandchildren Adam and Sarah Sprovieri, Paul and Michele Groulx and Angela Sprovieri. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 when family and friends will gather in Corpus Christi R.C. Church for the Funeral Mass beginning at 1:00 p.m. celebrated by Rev. Victor De Gagne. The interment will take place in the family plot in St. Andrew's Cemetery. Elaine enjoyed volunteering for and supporting charities associated with her Catholic faith. Donations in her memory to the St. Joseph's Foundation or to St. Vincent de Paul Society at Corpus Christi Church would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements are in care of the Sargent & Son Funeral Directors, 21 N. Court Street.
Elaine's wit, humour and enthusiasm for life will be a treasured memory for those she knew and loved. Mom and grandma; we love you and will miss you.

Teri, Mark, Ken and families, Words cannot adequately express the sadness we feel hearing of your Mom's passing. Both your father and mother were very special to our family'. Being friends with you Teri, over the years, I was always greeted with warmth and love and welcomed into your home. Then when Richard and Robin moved across the street they were welcomed to the neighbourhood by your family. Having lost my parents your mother was like a second Mom to me! She was able to tell me stories of the Italian community my mother and aunts were part of! She was kind of like my link to my past and I will truly miss hearing her tell stories or saying to me when I saw her " Listen to your mother" Elaine, heaven surely has another angel! Rest in peace! Thank for all the ravioli you and Ruthie provided to my family. My son will always remember you as the "ravioli lady". That is what he called you when he was little! Love, Linda, Arthur and Ian Kontunen
