Elfriede Richtig Obituary

April 13, 1925 - November 5, 2015

It is with deeply saddened hearts the family of Elfriede (Effie) Richtig, age 90 years, announce her passing on Thursday November 5th.

Elfriede and her three children traveled from Lubeck, Germany to Fort William, Ontario in August 1951 where she reunited with her husband who made the journey earlier to find a home for the family.

Her early years in Canada were filled with many challenges. Effie was the foundation of her family while working many jobs and raising five children. In the early 70's they moved to Belleville, Ontario for her husband's career advancement, then returned to Thunder Bay in 1988.

After returning to Thunder Bay they moved to Donald Street, and on March 1st, 2013 Effie moved to Sister Leila Greco apartments where she remained until her passing. She especially loved her time spent there where she participated in the numerous activities available to her. Effie's infectious laugh and boisterous personality endeared her to all. Effie always raved about the exceptional care she received from the devoted staff at Sister Leila Greco. It was very comforting for Effie's family to know she was surrounded by so many loving friends the last years of her life. Especially dear to her heart were her dining companions Mary, Gisella, and Inga.

Effie is survived by her… Children Volker (Gail) Lehmann, Monika Leishman, Peter Richtig, Peggy (Glen) Kralka, Brenda Richtig, Grandchildren Jackie (David) Suttie, Jim (Wendy) Lehmann, Rhonda (Don) Strickland, Darren (Kellie) Leishman, Kav Richtig, Kyle (Darrell) Richtig, Avram (Hillary) Richtig, Ashley Richtig, Stacey (Stephen) Cole, Great-grandchildren Amanda and Mitchell Suttie, Phoebe and Jett Leishman, Curtis, Julia, and Emily Lehmann, Justin Nedeau, Jordan Richtig, Jakob, Sophie, and Zephyr Richtig, and Breanna Cole, Special niece Lorraine Fischer, and nephews Ralph (Sai) and Randy Fischer, and many other relatives in Germany.

Predeceased by husband Matej Richtig, infant daughter Debbie, son-in-law Jim Leishman, sister and best friend Helga Fischer, and five sisters in Germany.

Respecting Effie's wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will be held.

If friends desire, memorial donations may be made in her name to the local charities of Effie's choice; Northern Cancer Fund at TBRHSC, and/or Heart & Stroke Foundation.
