ERIC GRANT "BUD" SMART JUNE 9, 1924 â€" APRIL 12, 2012 Mr. Eric Grant "Bud" Smart age 87 years passed away in hospital on Thursday, April 12, 2012. Born on Tupper Street in Port Arthur to Norman and Ida Smart, he was a lifetime resident of Thunder Bay. After leaving school, he took up the upholstering trade, working at Chapples, The Decorating Studio as well as the Chesterfield House. In 1953 he and Andy Pope started their own business, Custom Upholstering which they operated until retirement in 1989. Eric lost his hearing at age 17 due to spinal meningitis, however he did not let that keep him from enjoying life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger days, camping, golf, swimming and walking in his retirement. Survived by his wife Nobu, stepdaughter Naomi Smart and her husband Floyd, son-in-law Bob Piccinin, sister Marjorie Deagle, sisters-in-law Pat Ioi, Sets Oda, brothers-in-law Ken Tsubouchi (Kay), Eiji Tsubouchi (Dorothy), special nephew Len Smart (Debbie), stepgrandchildren Colin Smart (Susan), Kara Brown (Lascelles), Christopher Smart (Anne), 4 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, brother Keith Smart (Margaret), sisters Helen Rudman (Borge), Audrey Godfrey (Frank), Stepdaughter Linda Piccinin and brother in law Nick Deagle. Funeral Services for the late Mr. Eric Smart will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 10:30 AM in Westminster United Church, 650 River Street. Private interment of Ashes to follow in Riverside Cemetery. Should friends so desire, donations made in memory of Eric to Westminster United Church or Meals on Wheels would be greatly appreciated.
