ERNIE KIVI Obituary
November 29, 1936 - February 3, 2026
With heavy hearts, the family of Ernie Kivi announce his passing at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital. Surrounded by family, Ernie quietly slipped away. Although this battle was brief, he had fought many others over the years that were enough for several lifetimes, and we can take comfort that he is finally at rest.
Born in Port Arthur, Ernie and his siblings spent a great deal of their youth making names for themselves on the back roads in Silver Mountain, then later Beardmore. Ernie was always drawn to the open road. What began as a career driving trucks in remote bush camps evolved into what would become his lifelong passion of long-haul transport driving. For over 60 years Ernie worked as an owner-operator for a number of different companies, criss-crossing Canada and the United States many times over. This was a job that leant itself well to Ernie's reserved and contemplative nature, and one he did with a great deal of pride.
Despite his quiet life, Ernie cut a memorable figure. Standing over 6 feet tall, he was always impeccably dressed. He was never without his signature cowboy boots and hat and frequented many coffee shops around town in his later years.
Ernie is survived by his wife Nancy; sister Evelyn, brother Edwin; daughter Debbie (Jaime), son Brent; stepson Darren; grandchildren Terrilynn (Patrick), Brandon (Jenn), Kristin, Kyle (Michelle), Conner; and his four great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents Ernest & Laimi; son Terry; sisters Elsie & Eila; and brothers Esko & Elmer.
There will be no funeral services held at this time. For those who knew Ernie and would like to honour his memory, donations can be made to Grace Place of Thunder Bay (235 Simpson St.). And the next time you crack a Coors Light, give kippis to Ernie.
Love you always. Rest in peace.
