Passed away peacefully at the age of 95 at the Valley Manor Nursing Home in Barry's Bay, ON. Some of you will remember Esther when she lived in Thunder Bay. She taught English at Port Arthur Collegiate, Lakeview High School and Selkirk High School in the fifties and early 60's. She enjoyed her students immensely and often recalled their names in later years. Born in Galt (Cambridge), Es started her teaching career at Alma College, a girl's boarding school in St. Thomas. She also taught in Port Credit before moving to Port Arthur. She married Len Beaupré in 1961. Esther was smart, lively, fun and enjoyed literature. After retirement she was involved with the Fred Varley Art Gallery in Markham. Predeceased by her husband Len, her sister Evelyn Elmslie and niece Margaret Elmslie. Esther left behind her nephew John Elmslie (Marilyn) in Prince George, B.C., niece Mary Jane Elmslie (Rolf) in Barry's Bay, and stepdaughter Gabrielle Beaupré in Thunder Bay. A memorial gathering is planned for her interment at Mountain View Cemetery in Cambridge early this summer. Anyone wishing further details, please contact Mary Jane Elmslie at 613-756-5062 or at

She was an amazing teacher. She taught me English in the mid '70s. She knew her Shakespeare so well she made it come alive. She got me to enjoy it so much that I still go to Stratford as often as I can and remember her fondly after all these years.

Esther McGaw Beaupre was an ispiration to me, not only as an English teacher but as a fine, witty, human being curious about and delighted in life as well as in literature. I have very fond memories of when she cast me in two high school drama nights at PACI in the 1950s which spurred my life-long interest in drama. She and Len later became friends and when I was in the Ontario Legislature in the 1970s & 1980s I was fortunate enough to be invited to their home in Markham for a rare peaceful evening of quiet friendship away from the frenetic life of politcs. Esther was one of theose very special teachers who made all of her students feel she understood them. She's the reason I became a teacher. She's the reason I love literature to this day. Thanks for everything, Esther. You added more than your share of goodness to this world.

Miss McGaw taught me English at PACI and had a profound influence on my life, always encouraging my writing, When it became my life's work, I thought of her often. Fortunately, I was able to thank her in person at the 2006 PACI reunion. She was one of several outstanding teachers at PACI and I am grateful to her.

Esther and I shared many adventures working with Kathleen McKay and The City of Markham to bring about The F.H. Varley Art Gallery. Her knowledge, determination and quick wit made it an enjoyable task.

My fondest memory of Esther is the lasting echo of her laughter. Uninhibited, girlish and wildly contagious, her unmistakable laughter instantly lifted my spirits from the first day I met her, already well into her mid 70's. I admired her greatly for her fierce tenacity as an indefatigable advocate of the many causes she supported. I feel tremendously privileged to have shared the company of such a fine and honorable person. Rest gently dearest Esther.

Esther was a remarkable woman who touched the lives of so very many people. We were dear friends going back almost 50 years. I worked with Esther for years arranging her groups travelling to London, England - a much loved and respected teacher. She enlisted my help in planning the startup of the Varley Gallery in Unionville. Esther was definitely one of the key driving forces in the successful accomplishment of the Fred Varley Art Gallery, and renovation of the Kathleen McKay home and garden across from the Gallery. I'll miss my dear friend - she was family to us and left us a legacy of many wonderful memories.

Mrs. Beaupre made English such fun...her sparkling personality was a joy. Rest sweetly, Mrs. Beaupre. I'll always carry you fondly in my heart.

Mrs Beaupre was a well loved and most influential English teacher to teenagers in Richmind Hill. I still think of her often. She instilled a deep love of books in me that has served me well since the 1970's. I would love to attend the memorial in Cambridge Linda Kenny (519) 277 3939
