Fern Joseph Picard passed away peacefully with his family by his side last Wednesday evening after 90 years of living life to its fullest. He was born in St. Louis de Gonzaque, Quebec, grew up in Hearst, Ontario, and moved to Port Arthur after a stint in the Air Force stationed in Goose Bay Labrador. Fern was a quiet man and a liberal thinker who disregarded convention. He lived a life full of adventure and vigorous exploration of our natural world. He always loved the outdoors – from boating and fishing and walking in the bush to blueberry picking with his children and grandchildren. Over the years, he regaled his family with stories of living in bush camps, fishing trips to remote Northern Canada, and in his later years, his many travels to southern islands, Guatemala, and Alaska. Fern was fortunate to have had two long time loves, his wife Gladys Joyce Picard (1985) and by his life-long friend Margaret Doucette (2014). His living family includes siblings Marriette (Earl) and Hilaire (Gabby). His children Wayne, Beverly, David, and their families, Georgie, Becky, Gerrold, Josh, Owen, Mason, Marija, Corrie, Harvey, Eli, Tina, Morgan, Evan, Landon, Kezia, Rory, Claire, Aaron, Karina, Anders, Gabriel, Chris, Ellen, Norm, Marianne, Barb, and Bob and the many others who consider yourselves family and important to all of us. At Fern's request there will be no funeral. If you would like to donate to a charity in his name the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 5 would be a good choice. We will remember him through our acts of kindness to others.
