Florence Varrin-Campbell Obituary

VARRIN-CAMPBELL Mrs. Florence Mae (Flo) Varrin-Campbell (nee Matson), passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 12, 2005. Born in Fort William, she lived most of her life in Thunder Bay. Mom was very proud of her career as a Registered Nurse, with the bulk of her career at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital where she retired as a Supervisor of Nursing in the mid 90's. Mom was an avid traveler, seeing most of the world often traveling as part of a mission with her church; most recently in Rwanda building a school. She enjoyed swimming, at times competitively. Mom successfully represented Northwestern Ontario in the Seniors Games with gold, silver and bronze performances. She had a passion for dancing; belonging to the Light-Steppers Dance Team. Other interests included being a member of Knox United Church, curling, Magnus theatre, music, dining out, spending time with friends and most importantly, her family. Mom was an enduring spirit that truly lived life. Her motto was "If you are going to be a bear, be a grizzly". Mom will be sadly missed by her family- son Patrick, his family: Beverly, Darren, Cassandra and Jacob, from Campbell River, BC; daughter Linda Stevens, her family: Grant, Ryan, Brandon and Baily; son John Michael, from Whistler, BC: step-children: Wendy Campbell (Augie and Ricki), Adam Campbell, family member from the heart, Janet Spence (Rob and Robert Jr. ); and her companion Mel Gilbert. She is also survived by her siblings: Bill (Edris) Matson, Roy (Dorothy) Matson, Alfred (Maime) Matson, Millie (Rudy) Stajkowski, Helen (Wayne) Lankinen and Ernie (Verna) Matson; in-laws: Pheobe Matson, Alma Matson, and Eric Green. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by first husband Jack Varrin and second husband Ron Campbell; parents Gustav and Thea Mattson; sisters: Margaret Aho, Greta Green; brothers: Harold, Leo and Ivor Matson. Funeral Services for Florence Varrin-Campbell will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 19th, at Knox United Church, 1 Shuniah Street, officiated by Rev. David Silliman. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the time of Service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Flo's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Northern Cancer Research Foundation or to the charity of your choice.
