1936 - 2011With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Frank Arnold, age 74 years, at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on January 2nd, 2011. A life-long resident of Thunder Bay, Frank attended Prospect School and PATS (Hillcrest High School) then went to work at the Thunder Bay Paper Mill. He joined the city fire department in 1957, retiring as a Platoon Chief after 35 years of service. He loved his work and the camaraderie of fellow firefighters. For many years, he was the PR representative for the Fire Fighters Association as well as one of the planners of the annual picnic and kid's Christmas party. He was an active volunteer with Toys for Tots, starting many years ago fixing and painting toys.Frank was very active in sports. He made his mark in broomball, outrunning guys much younger than himself. He played high school football, later becoming a referee. Frank was a director and life member of the Canadian Firefighters Curling Association and maintained friendships across the country through this. He was a member of the Port Arthur Curling Club. Soccer was a big part of Frankie's life. He played with Repas United and later with the Thunder Bay Old Timers All Stars. Besides these, Frank played hockey, skied, and enjoyed golf. Frank also liked relaxing at home. He took pride in the front and back decks he'd built. Frank loved the outdoors and enjoyed many summer camping trips with his family. It was not uncommon for him to round up his children, and a few of their friends, and head to Kakabeka for a swim on a hot summer day. Always taking pride in his appearance, he was known as the best-dressed guy on fishing trips.Frank is survived by his son Kevin Arnold, daughters Karen Arnold and Cheryl Arnold (Tom Brownlee), the mother of his children Carol Arnold, his grandson James Clibbery, brother Charles Arnold (Norma), his partner Janet Niedbala and her family. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. He was predeceased by his parents Bernard and Laura Arnold (Evoy), his brother Bruce Arnold and his sister Joyce Newell. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of LPH Dementia Care and the nurses of TBRHSC 3C for taking good care of our dad.A Celebration of Frank's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 21st, 2011 in the Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street. Friends and relatives are invited together one hour prior to service time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Frank's memory to Alzheimer's Society of Thunder Bay or Toys for Tots.On-Line Condolences may be offered
