April 8, 1922 - February 18, 2017
It is with heavy hearts that we announce Fred Hager passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Hogarth Riverview Manor at the age of 94. He was born April 8, 1922 in Chamberlain, Saskatchewan to Johannes and Anna Maria Hager. He was a veteran of World War 2 serving in the Royal Canadian Army.
After the war, he settled in Geraldton, Ontario and worked in the bush camps. As a small motor mechanic he later owned Northern Saw Sales. He could listen to a power saw, outboard motor or lawn mower and know exactly what the problem was.
He had a strong work ethic and was a very hard worker. He made many sacrifices in his life and he always made sure his family was first. You always knew where you stood with him. He never minced words but did have a caring heart. His word was as good as a handshake. When he met you and shook hands he always wanted to see who could last the longest with his firm grip. He retired in 1987 and moved to Thunder Bay where he began his hobby of woodworking. He did very intricate work with his scroll saw and did beautiful intarsia as well as making furniture. He had a penchant for making clocks.
Fred is survived by his wife Elna, his daughter Diane and son-in-law Jerry Boyer. Also surviving are his sisters, Sister Veronica Hager, Theresia Hager, Anna Beingessner, Bertha Hager and brother Christian (Celine) Hager, sisters-in-law, Agnes Syrja and Herta Hager as well as nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his precious daughter Shelley Lynn. He was also predeceased by his parents, his siblings and their spouses; George, Joseph, John (Helen), Anton (Ilse), Eugenia (Tony) Diethelm, Eleonora (Leo) Boesser, Maria (Jacob) Seiferling, Rosalia (Peter) Oud-Hager; brothers and sister-in-laws Eugene Beingessner, Henry Syrja, Albert (Eva) Hendrickson and nephew Bruce Hendrickson.
The family would like to thank the caring and dedicated staff from 2N Dawson Court who treated him with respect and dignity and more recently Dr. Skunta, the staff of 2N Lavender and other departments at Hogarth Riverview Manor for the care and compassion shown towards him.
Thank you to Ron for his guidance and “going the extra mile” during this very sad and difficult time. Thank you as well to Pam for your expertise.
In respecting Fred's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral. Interment will take place at a later date. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Salvation Army of Thunder Bay, 545 Cumberland Street North, Thunder Bay, ON P7A 4S2 would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Dear Elna, Diane and Jerry, so sorry to hear of Fred's passing. I have many fond memories with Shelley as a child, causing trouble in the garden in Geraldton and stealing pop from the cooler in Fred's shop. He was a nice man. I still have a wooden clock he made for my Grandfather back in 2001, I think it was one of his first creations. May he rest peacefully together with Shelley and may you find solace in your memories. Sincere condolences, my thoughts are with you all.

So sorry to hear of Fred's passing, he was in the room next to my mom, Anne Boyes. We enjoyed cake at his birthday party and Diane was kind enough to give us photos of my mom and I that I never had the chance to thank her for. Fred, and Diane and her husband who visited often, will be missed by my mom and I at Hogarth. Our thoughts are with all the family at this sad time. Sincerely, Sharon Boyes

We are so sorry to hear about "Uncle Fred". I remember that firm handshake and the way he always asked "is that a fact". He's always someone i looked up to with his woodworking skills. To see the things that could be created with just a scroll saw and a sander was an inspiration. He will never be forgotten and is remembered through the many things he has built and left behind.
Love: Skylar Hendrickson, Sarah Lejeune and Alexander Hendrickson

My deepest Sympathy to the rest of the family.I think Fred rested a spell before he had to go consulting on reno's in God's house of many mansions. My greatest Uncle called a spade a spade, didn't waste time glossing words and had a heart of gold.God You made him,so don't get all sensitive if he tells how it is.Love your nephew Barry Hendrickson
