Frieda Seeliger Obituary

Mrs. Frieda Seeliger, aged 92, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Roseview Manor on October 20, 2016.

Frieda was born on November 26, 1923 in the small village of Borssum (near Braunschweig) in Germany. As a young women she completed high school and went on to secretarial school. After the war, she met and married her husband Hans in 1948. His family had fled from Silesia (western Poland) and had relocated to Borssum.

In 1952, Frieda sailed to Canada to join her husband, who had arrived the previous year. After several years of hardship and frequent moves, they finally saved enough to build their small house on Elliott Street in 1958. Here, she raised her family and stayed for the rest of her life. As her fluency and confidence in English improved, she began working, first as a cleaning lady in private homes, and then, in the housekeeping department at St. Joseph's Hospital. Later, she moved on to the old Post Office building in Port Arther, where she worked for 12 years until her retirement in 1988. Retirement gave her more time for shopping, watching her favourite soap opera, watering her flowers and travelling to visit family. Most of all, she enjoyed sitting in the backyard, in the shade, underneath her large poplar tree. Frieda enjoyed good health and could be seen mowing her lawn and shovelling her driveway well into her mid 80's. With the help of friends and good neighbours, she was able to live in her house till the last 4 months of her life.

Frieda is survived by her sons: Henry (Calgary) and Frank (Thunder Bay) and numerous relatives in Germany and Czechoslovakia. She was predeceased by her husband (1977), parents in Germany and sister in Czechoslovakia.

The family would like to thank the staff at Roseview Manor (Celeste House) and the nurses and physiotherapists at St. Joseph's Palliative Care 4 North, for their excellent and compassionate care. Following mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
