GABRIELLE PICARD Obituary

November 12, 1937 - April 6, 2025
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Gabrielle Picard on April 6, 2025. Gabrielle was born on November 12, 1937, the first sibling of a large French Canadian family. As the eldest daughter of a large family she learned to be a caregiver at an early age and continued to be a caregiver for the rest of her life. She worked many jobs including a cookie in lumber camp, Red Cross support worker, cleaner, and many other jobs along the way.

Mom was a beauty (movie star beautiful) and she met the love of her life Hilaire Picard (movie star handsome) and were married on August 20, 1956. They had both good and hard times but supported each other over the years which is a true testament of a good marriage. Together, they raised four children; Michel "Mike" (Fay), Gilles (Valerie), Sheila (Sergio), Perry (Holly). Mom loved children and was the best grandma, spoiling every one of her grandchildren; Michael (Jess), Jason (Emily), Braydon (Erin), Paige (Jamie), Anthony (Andi), Savanna (Rowan), Elizabeth, and Sydney and her great grandchildren; Alexis, Heath, Kaitlyn, Kendrick, JJ, Alivia and Ryker. Gabrielle was predeceased by her husband Hilaire Picard, her parents Cecile and Paul Despres, her brother Jean-Claude and many Picard relatives.

Mom loved her weekends at camp surrounded by family. She always made sure there was enough food and pastries (vachon) for everyone. Mom fed the birds (and sometimes bears) and spent hours watching hummingbirds. She also loved picking and cleaning blueberries. There was always blueberry pie at camp. Mom was the best fisherwoman, usually outfishing everyone. So many fish fries. Her most favorite pastime was gardening, especially planting and caring for flowers. Flowers were everywhere. Mom enjoyed the peacefulness of being by the lake and in her later years what is known as quiet company.

The family would like to thank Dr. Bezanson for helping mom do things her way. A special thank you goes to the staff at Paramed, especially Claudia who supported her at home. Thank you to Dr. Migay and nurses at St. Joseph's Hospital for your care and professionalism. Not only were you there for her but you were there for us. Your compassion was much appreciated.

Mom loved her family and always took care of everyone. Thank you mom. It didn't go unnoticed. We love you, we will miss you, until we meet again.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Picard, as all my family called her, was a very important person. She looked after both my father and mother for many years and was like a member of the family. My Dad often told her she was his 3rd daughter and I think she thought of him as a father. Her kindness and empathy were stellar--she was dependable, flexible and always loving. When our father died, she took care of our Mother and even dressed and prepared her for the funeral. I can´t say enough good about her and I will always remember her and be grateful to her. My parents were able to stay in their home because of her loyalty.
My sincere condolences to you, her beloved family.

Our condolences to your family for your loss. We live next door to your mom and we always appreciated her giving spirit. She gave our two kids Christmas tree ornaments every year and shared food from her garden. It was always nice to see her outside as our kids played on their swingset and we loved discussing life with her. We will miss seeing her especially in the summer months and hearing how she was heading to camp. Rest in peace.
