It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Garry Wilbert Reid on Friday, December 14, 2018 at the age of 75 years at the TBRHSC, with his loving daughter by his side. He was born on October 4th, 1943 and raised in Fort William, ON. In 1958 at the age of 15, he moved to Winnipeg, MB with his family. In March 1959, he saw a young girl who lived across the street and called her for a date, hence the love story began. He married the love of his life on June 29, 1963 and celebrated 55 years together. During this time, we were blessed with 2 beautiful children, a wonderful son-in-law and then 3 amazing grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He was the first to marry into our family of 10 and his in-laws always looked up to him, loved him and gave him the title of “big brother”. He leaves to mourn: his loving wife Yvonne, daughter Sheryl (John) Takacs, grandchildren Christopher, Cassidy, Camryn, son Sean and granddog Tucker. He will be missed by his brother and sisters-in-law: John McKay, his Best Buddy Wally Phillips, Hertzel (Bill) Naumoff, Andy Schinkel, Paul (Krys) Schinkel, Myna (Jim) Haluck, Karen (Gary) Lipchen, Rhonda (Jeff) Tipping, Sandy (Gerald) Betker and Gladys Reid; nephew/godson Peter Naumoff, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, member of family by choice Mark Wiejak, as well as other relatives and many special friends. Predeceased by his parents Ida and Lorne Reid, brother Robert, infant son Darren, in-laws Violet and Paul Schinkel, Ernie Schinkel, Marlene McKay, just recently Donna Phillips and godson Dean Karjalainen. Garry started his employment as an insurance adjuster in Winnipeg. In 1965, he was transferred to Fort William, ON. In 1974, he decided to attend Confederation College, where he excelled in the welding program and received his Welding Certificate. He then obtained the position of head welder with the City of Thunder Bay and retired in 2003. He was a quiet, kind and caring man who was always ready to help anyone in need, however, at times could be stubborn. He had a “NEED FOR SPEED” from snowmachines, motorcycles, stock cars to drag cars. He introduced drag racing, to his daughter and his three grandchildren followed. He loved watching the grandkids race their junior dragsters down the BIR drag strip, he was so proud of their endeavours. He loved working in his garage, engineering, fabricating and building anything that had to do with cars. His expertise was sought out by many. He was a member of the Lakehead Antique Car Club and loved cruising in his 1955 Chevrolet.
