Gary Peter Barabash
January 4, 1946 – February 26, 2015
The family sadly announces the passing of Gary Barabash on Thursday,
February 26, 2015 at the TBRHSC following a brief but very courageous battle
with cancer. Gary was born in Port Arthur, Ontario to Walter and Genevieve Barabash. He is survived by his wife Karen and daughter Nicole Latour. Also surviving is daughter Shelley Scott. Gary leaves behind his mother,
Genevieve Barabash, sisters: Shirley Cole; Bonnie Speed (David); Joanne
MacKenzie; Jane DeLuca (Sam); and brother Alan (Heidi). Many nieces and
nephews also survive. Gary was predeceased by his father Walter, sister Judy
Calcott, and brothers-in-law Ted Cole and David Calcott. Gary began his working life at the elevators in Thunder Bay, moving on to Dryden to work in the paper mill. In 1981, he returned to Thunder Bay where he was employed by Provincial Papers until he retired. Gary was an avid reader and enjoyed his daily crosswords. Being a devoted baseball fan, he never missed a St. Louis Cardinals game. In recent years, he served on the Board of Directors for Apple Credit Union. Gary had a compassion for animals which was evident through the care he provided to the family pets and the wildlife that visited the yard. He always had a pair of binoculars ready to watch the various birds that frequented the feeders. Cremation has taken place and friends of Gary and the family are invited to a "Come-and-Go" Visitation at the Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. to share memories and say good-bye. Should friends and family so desire, donations to the Thunder Bay & District Humane Society would be greatly appreciated. On-line condolences may be offered at

I just learned of Gary's passing and I am very sad. He was my best childhood friend and we shared many good times together growing up. Rock climbing at Hillcrest Park, swimming at Current River pool, playing street baseball, hockey and football on Cornwall Avenue between our houses and arguing the virtues of the Leafs (his) and the Canadiens (mine). All of these memories now leave me misty-eyed. Gary was a very good person and a gentle soul. He was the best person I knew. My heart goes out to all of his family and friends. Goodbye Barchie. You will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

Our deepest sympathy to the family. I have fond memories of Gary growing up in our earlier years. many good times were had when Gary and my other cousins came to visit us on the farm. He loved to fish in the creek on our property. In later years Gary would stop in at the Husky on his way to the Provincial Mill and chit chat. Wonderful memories. Rose and I are I Naples Florida at this time and unable to celebrate Gary's Life. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

RIP Gary, as a former co-worker at Provincial Papers he was good guy, quiet for the most part, but I'll always remember his "half time cheer" during those long 12 hr shifts on #5 & #6 paper machines. He and Joe Pulak Jr would each grab two handfuls of shavings from the winder and use them as pom-poms to celebrate the 6 hr mark of the shift.
He was the quiet, cerebral older guy but this makes me smile to this day.... condolences to you his family.
