Gary Stewardson Obituary

Gary Stewardson, 76, longtime resident of Cloud Bay in the Municipality of Neebing, passed away on September 26, 2022, at St. Joseph's Hospice after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer.

Gary was one of the hardest-working people around and a generous helper to his neighbours. He grew up on a dairy farm in Slate River and his dad taught him a strong work ethic. He loved trying new things and never wanted to retire.

He held many jobs and loved his last 20 years at Per Hol Construction. But when he got the call from Dr. Chan in July that the cancer was back he knew it was time to retire.

Gary was a wonderful husband, father, uncle (Uncle “Fuzz” to our friends' kids) and friend. He liked hunting, fishing and watching NASCAR and football.

On summer Saturdays we could be found on one of our neighbours' decks at 3:30 for cocktail hour.

Gary is survived by his wife of 55 years, Cathy (Menzies), his mom June of Thunder Bay, brothers Ron (Karen) of Kelowna, B.C., Owen (Barb) of Keg River, Alta., sister Diane Stewardson and special nephew Justin Stewardson of Slate River, sister-in-law Deborah Menzies of Thunder Bay and many nephews, nieces and wonderful friends.

He was predeceased by his beloved children Monica Lee and Mark Leonard in 1978, father Ernest, father- and mother-in-law Leonard and Jean Menzies, brothers-in-law Duncan and Clifford Menzies, and his grandparents.

I would like to thank the staff and doctors at Thunder Bay Regional Cancer Centre and St. Joseph's Hospice, especially Dr. Kevin Miller for trying so hard to make Gary's last days comfortable and for being a friend, and to all our friends for being there!

At Gary's request there will be no service. If desired, donations to Thunder Bay Regional Cancer Centre or the Charity of Your Choice in Gary's name would be appreciated.
