It is with sadness and sorrow that the Madeo family announces the peaceful passing of Gene (Eugene) Madeo at home, on Sunday, November 14, 2021, at the age of 87 years. Gene was born on May 29, 1934 in Port Arthur, Ontario, and lived his life in Thunder Bay. He initially worked with the Canada Steamship Lines on the Great Lakes, and often spoke about those days as his favorite job. It was a port of call in Little Current, Ontario, where he met his future wife Shirley and they moved to Port Arthur to begin their life together. Gene worked most of his life at Manitoba Pool Elevators and owned a couple businesses over the years, including the Modern Motel and Hunter Paving. His day-to-day life mostly centred around his home and family, and he would keep busy with projects around the house and yard. He enjoyed trailer camping with his family at multiple provincial parks over the years and in retirement would travel in their RV. After his retirement, he took up roller blading and competed in the Ottawa Race Weekend. The activity he most enjoyed was his late-in-life calling to be a body builder starting at the age of 68. In his 70's he competed in four body building competitions, winning two, and was featured in a national fitness magazine. He was a regular fixture at PUSH Fitness Centre, The Athletic Club, and most recently at Fit-4-Less. He was a favorite with staff and fellow gym attendees and was an inspiration to many. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Shirley, his sons Wayne, Dale (Marnie) and Darren (Stacey), his five grandchildren, Ryan (Julia), Shawn (Angie), Kiera (Travis), Jasmine, Emily, and five great grandchildren, Sophia, Noah, Olivia, Emma, and Kaliyah. Multiple cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Ramona Kovacs, his parents Innocenza and Basilio Madeo, and his sisters Mary, Rose, and Helen. Cremation has taken place and a private service will be held in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel. I met Gene a years ago on a Friday night, rollerblading indoors on the cement at Grandview Arena. After that our paths would cross from time to time, at one point learning that he and my step-father would good friends growing up. He was always soooo friendly and happy. Sorry to learn of his passing.

I met Gene a few years ago at Fit4less. I was amazed at his strength and physique for a man in his eighties. We talked body building and also he was so quick to help me with proper techniques and tips for weightlifting. What an inspiration. He will be missed.
