GEORGE ARTHUR SUTHERLAND June 29, 1920 ~ September 27, 2010It is with deep sadness that the family of George A. Sutherland announces his passing at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Monday, September 27, 2010. George was born in Copper Lake, Nova Scotia on June 29, 1920. Upon arriving in Thunder Bay, he first worked at the Shipyards, and then at the Provincial Paper Mill as a millwright and Mechanical Supervisor for 32 years. In addition, George was very active in the community. He was on the Public Board of Education and was chairman of the Property Council. He also served as President of the Provincial (Abitibi) Credit Union for 13 years and District Secretary Treasurer for 13 years. He was a member of Elim Church for over 50 years and had served on the Board of Directors as well as a member of Shuniah Lodge AF & AM #287 for over 60 years. To round out his many talents, he was active in Senior curling and golf. George married Myrtle Tracy in 1943 and they had two children, daughter Sheron and son Terry. He is survived by daughter Sheron (Ken) Gravelle and granddaughter Kimberley (Eric) of Ottawa, sisters Rose and Isabel, both from Nova Scotia. He will also be dearly missed by his special friend Rose Kulp. George was predeceased by his wife Myrtle in 1997, son Terry in 1987 and brothers Stan and Mack, both from California. Funeral Services for the late Mr. George A. Sutherland will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 4th, 2010 in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street. Visitation with friends and family will be held one hour before the Service. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
