It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of George Albert Tanner announces his peaceful passing on November 14, 2023, at age 95, in St. Joseph's Hospital, Hospice Unit.
George was born on November 22, 1927 in Port Arthur, Ontario. He was the eldest son born to Albert and Mildred Tanner. He was a kind, caring, gentle, hard-working man. He had a strong work ethic and was a good provider to his family. Being introduced to books at a young age, he was an avid reader for all his life.
George grew up in Current River. As a young man, he worked at various jobs. He was employed at Abitibi Thunder Bay Mill for 43 years, working several years as a millwright. Dad enjoyed hunting and fishing, was a member of the hand gun club and enjoyed watching sports, especially wrestling. Nothing brought him more pleasure than a good novel and a good cup of tea!
Dad married Vivian Allen on August 28, 1948. Together they raised their three children.
George will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his son Gary (Carrie); daughters Deborah-Lee and Jamie; brother James Tanner; sister-in-law Millie Allen; brother-in-law Peter Ilkew; and many nieces and nephews.
George was predeceased by his wife Vivian (2019); his parents Albert and Mildred Tanner; sisters; in-laws Laverne and Bernice Allen, Hans and Florence Olsen, Andre Allen, Irene and Walter Sohlman, Betty Ilkew; and lifelong friends Joe Dennis and Mike Krystalovich.
A celebration of George's life will take place on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, presided by Rev. Luigi Filippini of St. Anthony's RC Church. Visitation for family and friends will begin one hour prior to service time.
Cremation and interment to follow at a later date.
If friends so desire, donations in George's memory may be made to Northern Cancer Fund, Thunder Bay Diabetes Association, or Heart and Stroke Foundation.
