April 3, 1933 ~ February 11, 2026
Gerd Hamilton (nee Bissberg) passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, February 11, 2026 in hospital after a brief illness. Her 3 surviving children were with her on her last day.
She grew up in Hurkett, the only child of Knute and Inga Bissberg. Just after high school, her Dad passed away and she and her mother moved to Fort William where Gerd set about getting a job and an apartment. She was hired by Bell Canada as a long distance operator and found an apartment in Westfort where she and her Mom lived. She met and later married William Gordon Hamilton, and the three of them lived in Westfort until Gerd and Gordon's first child Carol was born. They moved to Vickers Heights to live in Gordon's family home. Gerd's Mom lived with them until her passing in 1959. Gerd and Gordon raised 4 children there. When the children were old enough, Gerd got a job at Sears as a switchboard operator and then in Personnel. She worked there for many years. Gerd and Gordon enjoyed winters in Florida and summers at Kash River Resort. After Gordie's passing, Gerd stayed in Vickers Heights until her passing. She was a resident of Vickers Heights for 70 years. She was a very dedicated volunteer for many years at a number of different organizations: ANAF Service Club and Colour Party member, Vickers Garden's Women's Institute, The Viking Club, The Scandinavian Home Society and was very involved in the Vickers Heights Community Centre's activities.
Gerd loved to cook, garden, do crafts, spend time with family, travel and learn about her Norwegian heritage.
Gerd's family was the most important part of her life. She is survived by daughters Carol (Buster) and Susan, son Larry (Deidre), grandchildren Jennifer and Lee Hamilton, Kim, Jamie (Kdee), Amanda and Jeff (Victoria) Young, Laura (Devon) Blair, Cale Hamilton and great-granddaughter Hallie Blair. She adored her grandchildren and great grandchild and loved spending time with all of her family. She was an incredible Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother. She was a very caring woman and will be missed by many.
She was predeceased by her parents Knute and Inga Bissberg, her husband William Gordon Hamilton, her son Gary, daughter-in-law Donna, cousin Eleanor (Ken) Methot, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: June and Henry Feaver, Wilma and Victor Koczkur, Ross and Helen Hamilton. Gerd loved her in-laws and was very close to them.
A private interment has taken place at Mountainview Cemetery, where she was laid to rest beside her beloved husband Gordie on Thursday, February 19.
A celebration of Gerd's life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, The Salvation Army or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James.
