GINA COMMISSO Obituary

It is with indescribable sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Gina Commisso.

Born in Reggio Calabria, Italy, on March 7, 1931, to Carmela and Domenic Costa, Gina immigrated to Canada as a young girl on the SS Conte di Savoia, arriving in Nova Scotia before settling in Schreiber, Ontario. There, she built a life defined by resilience, hard work, and deep devotion to her family. She learned English, adapted to a new country, and helped support her family from a young age, eventually being pulled out of school at 12 years-old to become an integral part of the family business, Costa's Foods.

In 1948, Gina met her soulmate, Joseph (Joe), and they were united in marriage in 1950. Together they built a loving home, raised their children, and proudly operated the family business, which became a cornerstone of the community. Gina was known for her meticulous nature, generosity, and kindness. She took great pride in her bookkeeping, her home, and in serving the people of the town she loved always making sure no one left without a warm smile or a small treat.

Gina was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose love for her family was boundless. She cherished cooking, entertaining, hosting gatherings, making her famous sauce, enjoying music, and bringing people together. Her deep faith guided her life and sustained her through every challenge.

Predeceased by her husband Joe, her parents Carmella and Dominic, two brothers Albert and Tony, her brother-in-laws Nino, Cosimo, and Frank, sister-in-laws Laura and Assunta, and her little fur buddy Mirabella. She leaves behind her loving children Tony (Patti), Sandra (Joe), Gerry (Lawrence), and Patrick, her 12 grandchildren; Kaelan (Kirsten), Brennen (Meaghan), Joel (Lauren), Taylor (Katie), Elyssia (Justin), Evanya (Alex), Gregory (Jen) Marcus, Evan, Olivia (Jim), Cameron (Alex) and Madeleine and 7 great-grandchildren; Will, Bree, Mila, Adley, Brynlee, Lincoln, and Levi, all of whom were her pride and joy. She also leaves behind her two sisters Teresa, and Rosa, sister-in-law Lugina, and many extended family and dear friends who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.

Maintaining her strong mind and wittiness, Gina was a woman of strength, warmth, humor, and compassion. Gina's legacy will live on through the generations she nurtured and the countless lives she touched. Gina always told us "love one another, be kind to one another and be good to one another". Her family takes comfort in the many happy memories she leaves behind and in the love she gave so freely.

"Love and blessings always. xoxo" - Gina Commisso. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, February 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Angels Church in Schreiber. Arrangements have been entrusted to King Funeral Home, Schreiber. If friends so desire, expressions of sympathy may be made to Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church toward renovations for the new entry vestibule.

Thank you to Dr. Rushton and all who assisted in Gina's care. Thank you to Father Terry for the special trip he made. And finally, thank you to all those who visited Gina, kept her company, and added her to their prayers.

"I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun. Of happy memories that I leave when life is done."

Commisso Family,

Our deepest sympathy on the loss of your beautiful mother and grandmother. I will never forget Gina's smile and care for all her customers, including the newbies on a quest to plant their roots in foreign soils. She was indeed a kind, hard-working, and warm woman.

May you find comfort in the cherished memories of Gina and the legacy of love, resilience, and grit she's left behind. May your new guardian Angel always guide you from the heavenly skies.

I got to know Gina (over the phone only) through my work at RBC for many years. She was an exceptional human being, kind, caring and thoughtful, gifting me the most beautiful presents at Christmas for several years in a row. I only had the pleasure of meeting her in person one time when her and Joe came into the branch during a trip to Thunder Bay to a say hello. I always remember thinking she had such a huge heart for a tiny lady. Sending condolences to all who loved her.

I had the pleasure of working with Gina and the Commisso/Costa families. They possessed all the qualities I admired in my clients; honesty, hard-working, dedicated to their families and the church. Gina was a special person, and her family and anyone with whom she came in contact will mourn her loss.
