With sadness the family announce the loss of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. Gladys Marion Sergy (Kay), affectionately known as 'fancy gramma', passed away peacefully on March 1st, 2026.
Glady was born in 1928 in Dorion, youngest daughter of Joseph and Mary Kay. As a young girl, mom and her sister Violet travelled to Port Arthur in search of the big city life. It was there she met and married Alexander Sergy, a young man freshly home from the Navy. They shared 51 years together until Dad's passing in 1998.
A 'stay at home mom', five children kept her busy. She was a whiz on the sewing machine, fashioning matching outfits for us to wear on special occasions. Her home-made sugar donuts and frying pan chocolate cake were always a welcome treat. Once the kids grew up, mom got her driver's licence and found her dream job at Atkinson Jewellers.
After retirement, Alec and Glady made our camp on Lake Shebandowan their summer home and wintered in Florida. The peaceful life at the lake and Panama City Beach in the winter was the ultimate way to slow down and enjoy life.
Mom was an active member and volunteer of Trinity United Church for 75+ years. Dear to her heart was the annual Dessert of the Month. She volunteered at the Regional Hospital for 7+ years and dabbled in watercolour painting and calligraphy.
In 2017 a move into Jasper Place gave mom a new lease on life and she enjoyed her carefree days there. She reacquainted with old friends and made many new ones. Up until her health faltered, she walked daily, always saving time for afternoon tea and cookies.
Predeceased by her husband Alec, parents Joseph and Mary Kay, sisters Helen Stenlund and Violet Wandell, father and mother-in-law Aleksander and Boleslawa Sergej, sister-in-law Felicia Dudzinski and brothers-in-law Stefan Dudzinski, Henry Stenlund and Eugene Wandell.
Glady will be remembered by her children and their families: Gary (Milcha) Sergy, Debra (Michael) Whatley, Sheila Sergy, Donald (Kathy) Sergej and Kathy (John) Deak; grandchildren Jenn (Kier) Wilson, Glen (Lauren) Sergy, Geoffrey (Brittany) Whatley, Bree-An Lucas, Rebecca (Alex) Lucas; Andie Deak and Jessica Deak; great-grandchildren: Breaux, Nico, Cate, Brynn, Logan, Briar, Jake and Kaylee; nephew Jim Wandell and nieces and nephews from the Dudzinski, Stenlund and Wandell families; childhood and life-long best friends Agnes and Geraldine.
The family would like to thank the care givers at Jasper Place and St. Joseph's Care Group for their exceptional care and kindness and to Thunder Bay Paramedics for their compassionate visits, mom spoke fondly of each and every one of you.
A private interment will be held at a later date.
