GLEN AYLWARD Obituary

GLEN AYLWARD December 8, 1943 - July 30, 2024
Glen Aylward passed away peacefully on July 30, 2024, at St. Joseph's Hospital. Born in Port Arthur on December 8, 1943, Glen was one of twelve children born to Robert and Marian Aylward of Hurkett, Ontario.

From a young age, Glen excelled academically. At 16 he left home on a scholarship to Queen's University. Glen continued his education attending Lakehead University, where he completed his Bachelors of Education degree.

In 1971, Glen began his life's work as an educator teaching mathematics at Nipigon-Red Rock District High School where he later became head of the Math Department. Glen concluded his career in academics as Principal of the region's Continuing Education Program, until his retirement in 1999. During his career Glen also served as a negotiator for the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation where he received an award of merit for his contributions both locally and provincially. In his retirement Glen returned to his joy of lumberjacking in the "back 40" and spending summers rebuilding the family cottage on Lake Nipigon.

Glen's intellect and humour were defining qualities throughout his life. He always had a quick wit and a ready laugh. He was a master at delivering clever turns of phrase and hilarious sarcastic puns. Glen held a captive audience when telling a story, particularly when sharing memories of the many family adventures and antics throughout his life. He had a kind listening ear and would offer thoughtful advice to family, friends, and students alike. He remains a teacher to us all.

Glen married Audrey Picklyk in 1969. They were inseparable for 55 years, raising two children in their country home outside of Red Rock. Glen was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He adored his two grandchildren. They brought him such great happiness. While never keen on travel and preferring the comforts of home, Glen and Audrey flew across the world to New Zealand when their first grandchild was born, and then again some two years later.

Glen is survived by his loving wife Audrey, son Mark (Samantha), daughter Cynthia (Kama) and grandchildren Bloem and Billy. He is also survived by siblings Les and Allen (Carol) and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Glen is predeceased by his parents Robert and Marian, his mother and father-in-law Nellie and George Pawluk, brothers Robert, Mel, Gordon, Clyde, Dave, Bryan, Walter, Arnie, and sister Peggy.

The family would like to thank the paramedics, doctors, and nurses in the Emergency Department and 2C at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto for the care and compassion shown to Glen.

Special thanks to the team on 4N at St. Joseph's Hospice for all of your support to our family and for helping to keep Glen as comfortable as possible.

Thank you to Harbourview Funeral Home for your kindness and comfort provided to the family during this very difficult time.

If desired, donations in Glen's name can be made to St. Joseph's Hospice or your local food bank.
