Glenn Pattyson Obituary

The family of Glenn “Butch” Pattyson announces with great sadness his passing on April 4th, 2022 at the age of 79 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his brother Garth, half sister Ruth, in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and so many friends. “Uncle Butch” was a delight to be with. He was always ready to help anyone in any way throughout his life. Born on March 23rd, 1943, he was raised in Port Arthur and became one of the Elm Street boys. He attended Balsam Street School and Lakeview before graduating as an Electrical Engineer from the University of Manitoba. As a high school athlete, he excelled at school boy curling, winning a Northwest Ontario title. He played football as a Center for the Lakeview Lions. Butch won the Outstanding Lineman of the Year Award for all Ontario in his senior year, leading to the Port Arthur Sportsman of the Year title, as well. In order to save money for school, he worked in the summers at the Terrace Bay Pulp Mill, staying with Auntie Dean and Jim Clancy. He learned alot about life and friendship there as he partied with cousin Doug and close buddy Bob Hopper. After graduation Butch began a long career in Pulp and Paper Engineering. He started with Kimberly Clark in Kapuskasing and then transferred for nine years to Mount Holly Springs, Pennsylvania. He became their Plant Engineer successfully completing many new projects while leading a fine team. Butch even found time to play on their hockey team. He was the token Canadian and allowed to play because he showed them how to drink good beer. He made a lifelong friend named Jim whom he visited many times in his retirement years. They loved to go morel mushroom picking and sample Cumberland County Wine in his cabin. Butch always took some of his homemade “birch sap” wine to share – no tree was safe! Butch moved back to Terrace Bay Mill to finish his career where it all started. A very happy retirement followed as he continued to curl in the winters at the Port Arthur Curling Club. His summers included many fishing and golfing trips with family and friends. His favourite place, however, was the family camp at Two Island Lake. He devoted his time to improvement projects – solar system, landscaping, road building, to name a few. If a tree blew down or had to come out, he was working on stump removal and filling the hole the very next day. He could be seen in a shady spot having a victory drink on completion. The now great expanse of lawn is a testament to his hard work! He also loved to look after his hummingbird pals and various other bird species that came to his spinning “squirrel proof” feeder. During the day all worked fine, but at night those pesky squirrels would somehow empty it out. Even he could not outwit them, so he just kept buying enough seeds for all. Butch especially enjoyed it when family would come down for a sauna and swim. Every Sunday he would cook us either steaks or salmon. My brother was predeceased by his parents Kay Simonsen and Earl Pattyson, step-father Erling Simonsen, sister Erin Yurick and infant brother Lyndon; beloved aunts and uncles from the Pattyson and Moore families. Butch is survived by brother Garth Pattyson (Debby), half sister Ruth Simonsen, nieces Zoie Guerard (John), Tammy Pollock (Bill), Karrie Cavner (Mark), Chryssy Maxwell (Richard), Abby Pattyson, nephews Mike and Jared Yurick, Shane Pattyson (Erin), brother-in-law Glenn Yurick (Marilyn), cousin Doug Moore (Rose), the Pattyson Clan and numerous good fishing, wine making and coffee drinking buddies. Cremation has taken place. As Butch wishes, no service will be held and a family gathering at Two Island Lake will be held at a later date. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Port Arthur Curling Club would be appreciated by the family.
