GORDON MACKENZIE Obituary

GORDON MELVILLE MACKENZIE Nipigon, ON
"I know the author of tomorrow has ordered my steps."
Gordon Melville Mackenzie was born on April 2, 1954, to Alastair and Helen (nee Hurst) Mackenzie in Hamilton, Ontario, and passed away on July 13, 2025, on Porphyry Island, in his boat, Fair Havens, with his beloved wife, Karin, at his side. Gordon was deeply connected to nature, earning a Forest Technician diploma and a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from Lakehead University, which led to a successful career in the forestry industry. Later, he obtained his dream job as a data analyst at the Brass Bell Family Resource Centre.

Gordon was actively involved in his community; he spent 14 years with The Boy Scouts of Canada and served as a Councillor for 8 years with The Township of Nipigon. His charitable spirit extended to various volunteer roles as well, sitting on several Boards including the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital, Connection Community Church, and the Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior (CLLS). His love for music over the years saw him involved with the Mohawk Swingphonic Band, Manitouwadge Jazz Ensemble the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, Triple C Revival and The Beatitudes. Gordon's passion for music was further realized in duets and performances at local ceremonies and church events.

An avid outdoorsman, Gordon enjoyed hiking, cross-country skiing, camping, swimming, and boating, notably launching his restored Steelcraft boat, Fair Havens, in 2020. He treasured family camping trips and scenic voyages on Lake Nipigon and Lake Superior. His enjoyment for life and community was expressed through his weekly column, "Melville's Musings," published in the Nipigon-Red Rock Gazette.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Karin, his four children and his grandchildren: Rory (Christine) and Westley; Laura, Angelina, Justice, A.J., Esmé, Anika, Elias, Theo and Caine; Nelson (Sarah) and Braelyn; Calvin (Joanna), Karsten and Baby-on-the-way, his three sisters, Lynda Wainscott (David), Bonnie Zimmerman (Wayne) and Barbara Walker (Brian), numerous nieces and nephews and their children, and many special friends. He leaves behind a legacy of love, devotion, and profound community ties.

Celebrations for Gordon's life will happen during the summer of 2026. Donations to the CLLS (clls.ca/about/) would be meaningful and greatly appreciated.
