GREGORY RUBENICK Obituary

GREGORY ALLAN
It is with heartbreaking sadness (no pun intended) that we announce the passing of our son, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend Greg Rubenick on November 22, 2023, at the age of 43.

Greg had a love of fishing that started at the age of 3 when he caught his first pickerel with his dad at Kab Lake. Dad said, "wind it in," and Greg kept winding it in until the fish was kissing the top of the rod, and Greg was still winding it in. He continued to fish with his dad as a member of the P.A.C.C. Fish Club where he placed 3rd in the speckled trout category for 2023.

Greg grew up in the East End running the streets with his friends Glenn and Ryan, playing video games, hanging out at the Boys and Girls Club, and trying various sports with not a care in the world.

His short stint as a hockey player developed into a love of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames.

During high school, while playing St. Patrick's football, Diabetes intercepted his life and became a lifelong battle.

Despite his struggle with Diabetes and mental health, his unique sense of humor, kindness to others, and love of gaming prevailed.

Greg enjoyed playing video games online with his cousin Andrew, playing Magic the Gathering with his friend Jay, and Dungeons and Dragons with friends Gord and Stu.

Walking into his apartment was like entering a shrine of Funko Pops dedicated to all the pop culture icons he loved. Most sacred were his DC and Marvel characters of which Green Lantern was his favorite.

"No matter how bad things get, something good is out there just over the horizon." ~Green Lantern
Greg is survived by his parents Alex and Pat Rubenick, sisters Kathryn Rubenick (Blain) and Susan Rubenick, aunts, uncles, cousins, and his beloved cat Ladybug. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Uncle Brian Edwards, Uncle Micheal Rubenick, Uncle Ed Polec and his cat Whispur.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 1:00 pm located at 1060 Lithium Drive, Thunder Bay. In honoring Greg and his passion for Green Lantern, please consider wearing green to the Celebration of Life. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Canadian Diabetes Association or Adult Mental Health Services - Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
