Harry Hands Obituary

Mr. Harry Wellington Hands age 86 years, resident of Thunder Bay, died in St. Joseph's Hospice, on Tuesday March 26, 2002. Born in Chapleau, his early years were spent there. He graduated from High School in Kemptville Ontario. From there he moved to Hamilton where he worked for Stelco until the war. Harry was in the RCAF and flew with the 77th Squadron of the RAF. For three years he was a POW. Following the war Harry returned to Canada and on June 7, 1946 was married to Orpha Felhaber in Killaloe Ontario. He worked again for Stelco and in1949 they moved to the Lakehead settling in Westfort. He worked for a short time for the Assessment Office and then gained employment with the Post Office working there until retirement in 1981. Harry, also known as 'Poppy' loved his family very much and time spent together was very important to him. Summers were spent at the family camp on Windermere Lake and they were very special to him. He loved to fish and spent many enjoyable hours on the water. He also loved to cook. One of his specialties was homemade bread. Harry was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #6, the RCAF XPoW's, the Air gunners Association and the Superannuates of Ontario. He is survived by his wife Orpha, married 56 years this June, daughter Brenda and her husband Reed Berringer, son W. Ron and his wife Kathy of Burlingtom, grandchildren, Mark & Lori, Jill and Darcy Nygard, Brent and Allison, step sister Gwen Jones and husband Gordon. Two nieces, one nephew and other relatives also survive. He was predeceased by his parents Frederick and Elsie, son Richard, step mother Maude, sister Wynne, brother-in-law George Richardson, brothers Walter, Jim and his wife Muriel. Cremation has taken place and funeral services will be held on Saturday March 30, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. in the Blake Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Jack White of Broadway United Church officiating. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #6 will hold a Service of Honour in conjunction with the funeral. Family will be present to receive friends one hour prior to service. Final interment will follow at a later date. If friends desire memorials to St. Joseph's Hospice or the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.A tree will be planted in memory of Harry Hands in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove.
