Hazel Mary Anne Oickle (Petch, Squitti), age 97 years - just 3 days short of turning 98 - passed away peacefully at TBRHSC after a short illness on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at 3:36 p.m. A longtime resident of Thunder Bay. Born in Dryden, moving to Thunder Bay as a young woman, meeting Benjamin Squitti where they married and started a family; Willian (Joyce), Terry, John, Frank (Christine), Brian (Francesca). Hazel had a very interesting and challenging life. The passing of her young husband at the age of 35. Showing her strong resolve, she kept the family together. The family later added a girl Kathleen, the apple of her eye. Spending 4 years in Calgary, she again moved her family back to Thunder Bay in the Spring of 1964. Hazel's family grew to 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, to whom she was SO proud of. One thing Hazel absolutely loved was bingo. We were always surprised of how many cards she could play at one time. She travelled to Canada, USA, and England. Hazel supported her family working at Zellers, Chapples, and the Prince Arthur. She was born into a large family of 9 siblings: Jack, Edward, Frank, Charles, Robert, Truman, Kathleen, Joan, and Ruby. She was the last surviving member. Predeceased by her daughter in law Karen, grandchild Kimberly, daughter Kathy and parents Charles and Emily Petch. Celebration of Hazel's life will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 30, 2024 in the chapel of Sargent and Son Funeral Home, 21 North Court St. with Rev. Michael Mahoney officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Hazel will be laid to rest at St. Andrew's Cemetery with Ben at a later date. In lieu of flower, donations to Canadian Diabetes Association or Arthritis Association would be appreciated.
