HELEN MacDIARMID Obituary

MacDIARMID 1939 ~ 2025
Helen Elizabeth MacDiarmid passed away peacefully on April 7, 2025, at the age of 85. Helen was born in Ingonish, Cape Breton Nova Scotia on December 16, 1939. She was lovingly raised by her grandparents Susie and Walter Neal, and she maintained close ties to her home throughout her life. Helen graduated from Nova Scotia Teacher's College and taught for several years in Cape Breton. Helen met Frank MacDiarmid while he worked in Ingonish with the Bank of Nova Scotia, and in the fall of 1965, she left Cape Breton, travelling to Calgary Alberta where she and Frank were married on October 2 of that same year. After moving between Calgary, Edmonton, and Lethbridge, Helen and Frank brought their young family to Thunder Bay, arriving in January 1974. It was here they would spend the rest of their lives together. Helen became an active member of Trinity United Church and gave much of her time and talents to her church community. Helen was a compassionate, loving person who was most happy when with family and friends.

Helen is lovingly remembered by her husband Frank, her children Paul (Jill) and David (Caryn); her grandchildren Kendall, Dan, Leigha, and John; and her sister Brenda (Ervin) Robertson, as well as her extended family and friends. She is predeceased by her mother Mary (Stan) Hardy, and her sister Diane (Jimmy) Robinson.

Helen's family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the staff at Hogarth Riverview Manor, especially to the staff of 1 North and 6 North, for their kind and compassionate care.

A service of remembrance and thanksgiving will be held at Trinity United Church, Thunder Bay, on Friday, May 30, 2025 at 11:00am, with a private interment to follow. For those who desire, in lieu of flowers, a donation to Trinity United Church or a caring organization of your choice would be appreciated.

I am sorry to learn of Helen's passing and extend my sincere condolences to Frank and family. Amazingly, it is 51 years ago that I first met Frank, and since we both worked for the same bank, we had occasion to meet socially and with our wives once or twice a year at bank functions. When I moved from Winnipeg to Thunder Bay, with my family in 1965, also with the bank, we all became closer. Helen was a great person, full of that wonderful Cape Breton spirit.
Frank, you are commended for visiting Helen daily during her stay at the manor.
My God bless you and your family during this period of grieving.
