The family of Helen McLennan announces her passing in St. Joseph's Hospital, Hospice Unit, following a brief illness, on Monday, April 12, 2010. Helen was born on March 17, 1917 in Rainy River, Ontario where she grew up, first married, gave birth to son Howard, and managed several businesses until moving to Thunder Bay, where she was employed as Credit Manager at McKellar Hospital and later as Director of the Social Service. In Thunder Bay, she met her lifelong partner Donald Nash. Her enjoyment of challenges was evident when she acquired her pilot's license. She was the Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Rainy River. Helen was a compassionate and caring person, always willing to help others. She exalted energy and spunk, appreciating life and the people around her and was always ready to expound on the pride she took of her Norwegian heritage.For thirty-two years, Helen and Don resided in their home at Sunnyside Beach which she designed. During that time they enjoyed relaxing on their deck watching the waves and wonderful sunrises and sunsets. Helen thrived amongst the surroundings she loved with family, friends, and neighbors. Helen is survived by Don Nash, her partner of 38 years; son, Howard (Jan) McLennan; grandson Bruce (Ginette); great grandsons Kyle and Tyler; granddaughter Gretchen (Sarah); step-daughter Joanne (Walter) Kembel; step-grandson DJ (Amy) Kembel and their children Olivia and Emily; sister Eileen (Bob) Ellman and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by her parents Ole and Alvilda Sandvik; two sisters Minnie and Mary; and two brothers Mel and Edward.The family thanks all the wonderful care givers at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, Hospice Northwest, and St. Joseph's Hospital, Hospice Unit who helped Helen during the last days of her life. Following cremation, a Celebration of Helen's Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 6th, 2010 in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev. Lloyd Ivany. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Helen to Northern Hearts, or to the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay would be appreciated.On-Line Condolences may be offered
