Hilkka Vainio

1929 - 2023

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Hilkka Orvokki Vainio with her family by her side at Hogarth Riverview Manor on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at the age of 93.

Hilkka was born on November 11, 1929 in Kirvu, Karjala, Finland. She immigrated to Canada in 1952 with her husband Tauno and young son.

Hilkka spent countless summer and winter days fishing with her husband, friends and family. She never missed an opportunity to go blueberry picking; her blueberry pies, pulla and salt fish sandwiches were enjoyed by all who entered her home. Many people also had warm hands and feet from her beautiful knitted mitts and socks. She was a devout follower of Jesus and a faithful member of Hilldale Lutheran Church.

Hilkka is survived by her children Taina (Phil) Hordy, Tarja (Michael) Kowalchuk and Ari. She was a devoted Mummu to her 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Hilkka is also survived by family in Finland.

She was predeceased by her husband Tauno, infant son Tenho and son Taito, parents, 7 brothers and 1 sister.

The family would like to thank the staff of 7 North, H.R.M. for their care of Mummu.

A celebration of Hilkka's life will be held at Hilldale Lutheran Church, 321 Hilldale Road, on Thursday, March 16, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. presided by Pastor Sirpa Tolppanen. Visitation will begin one hour prior. A private interment in Riverside Cemetery will follow the reception. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be streamed live and then archived at www.harbourviewfuneral.ca where condolences may be offered as well.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hilldale Lutheran Church.
