To family and friends. I decided to finally get around to re-reading my civilization binders that Hugh wrote over 30 years ago. I found his courses fascinating so I kept the books. I got a kick out of reading the forward and intro this time around. I decided to look him up on the web and came across this. His books were three ring papers that we had to put in a binder. When I´m done if anyone wants these binder books let me know. [email protected]

My parents had very fond memories of Hugh being the minister at St Paul's United Church and I believe he was the reason they became members of St Paul's!
Over the years my parents and myself took numerous courses that Hugh offered at the college. Never did take one of those trips, tho!
Fast forward many years, our family was eternally grateful, when we asked Hugh if he would conduct our mother's funeral. He did it with grace and thoughtfulness, even though he he had just his lost his June.
Hugh was always kind and gracious whenever our paths crossed.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all, during your time of sorrow.
With deepest sympathies Michele (Kreikmann) Iuvancigh and Family

Dear Family of The Rev. Hugh,
I met Hugh while teaching at Confederation College. We were assigned to share an office. He was a wonderful office mate and friend. He was kind, bested us with his knowledge of music and Western Civilization. I enrolled in his evening courses and much to my surprise received 117 the exam. The only time in my education journey I received more than 100%. Blessings and prayers to you who carry on, Alice Morgan

My Mom and I had the privilege of joining one of Hughs tours, I think it was 1979. My future husband had joined Hugh 2 years prior. We both still share stories of our experiences, and the knowledge gained has had life long impact. Thank you Hugh

I have had the good fortune to call Hugh a teacher and a friend. I was one of the thousand or so who went to 'Paris and beyond'. I also took each course he taught at the College in the late 70's/early 80's. He shared his passion about The Arts, music in particular, with so many. I am thankful for all he gave.

Best obituary ever, just like Hugh MacDonald, thought provoking, entertaining and colourful.
Hugh definitely falls into the `What a guy´ category. My elderly aunt and uncle went to Europe as part of Hugh´s class and absolutely loved sharing his happy historical adventure. Hugh was our summer neighbour at East Loon Lake and as a kid I played horseshoes with him. On numerous occasions Hugh allowed his stepson Randy and myself to punish the air on his piano as a duet no less. Hugh´s other stepson Mike has always been a person of high integrity. My father once described Hugh as `nobody´s fool´ which is of course absolutely true on all counts.
In closing farewell Hugh you touched a lot of lives and I´m sure glad our paths crossed.
Sincerely, Kelly Greer

I remember taking a course in Western Civilization from Hugh McDonald so many years ago and that knowledge has followed me the rest of my life. He taught us not only history but appreciation of music, architecture and humanity. A marvelous man.

We remember fondly Hugh's visits to the Ottawa Valley to visit the Byce and Huckabone families. In recent years, Hugh was so good to keep in touch with my mother (Lola), who passed away in September, and Jim Huckabone, who is now living in a retirement home in Renfrew. I also remember Aunt Elizabeth and Uncle Mac from visits to Foresters Falls, and visiting Aunt Eliz at her apartment in Ottawa. Peace to your families.

My condolences to the family. I had the pleasure of taking his Western Civilization course at Confederation College in the 79´s and it was one of my favourite courses , made more enjoyable by Hugh . May he find his reward for a life well lived .

Hugh taught classical music to our Radio/Television class at the college back in the late 70s. A thankless job, given we were all rock `n´ rollers - but he tried to impress upon us the difference between a concerto and a symphony, and how to properly pronounce Rachmaninoff.
Thanks for trying, Hugh. Godspeed.

It has been a couple of years since I have talked with Hugh . He was always interesting to chat with . His love for his fellow man and time to help those in need was always apparent . As for Gigi and Pumpkin I knew them as well . Spoiled ? Maybe just loved a lot . My condolences to the family . Life goes on but positive thoughts are everlasting .

Hugh, you were the most influential teacher of my scholastic career and you didn't even know it. That is on me, of course. I know countless other students, of all ages, could say the same thing. Thank your for the gifts you shared so happily. God bless you and keep you.

Many good memories of Hugh, his opinions and humour, intertwined with a vast knowledge of "Classical" music. Although, as Hugh would point out, the "Classical" period was only one of several in human history where we find such enduring pieces of art and architecture. Rest in peace, Hugh and thank you for enriching my appreciation of music.

I first met Hugh in 1973 as a student at Confederation College. He was very responsible for sparking my interests in the humanities. I filmed a documentary of Hugh at his beloved piano in 1974, he was such a talent. My late father Charlie Grant and Hugh began their great friendship at Confederation College when my father asked Hugh to join his annual European class tour with his students from Travel and Tourism. Hugh would bring with him his vast knowledge of Western Civilization. Their friendship lasted through the years and I thank Hugh for his unconditional kindness shown to my father. Sad news indeed. A Life Well Lived.

Hugh was my instructor in college, teaching the "History and Appreciation of Classical Music" for our Radio Broadcasting program. Later at CJSD-94FM I would operate his radio programs "Classical Favourites" and "Sunday Light". Hugh would be on one side of the glass, eyes closed, hands together, enjoying his beloved music. I would be on the other side of the glass, usually reading a book while the music played on. I would like to wait until the last possible minute, pretending I was unaware of the record ending. However as the side of the record would come to an end I was to bring down the volume, lift the stylus, flip the record (picking it up by the edges), cleaning the record, gently lowering the stylus, starting the turntable and raising the volume again. All under the watchful gaze of Mr. MacDonald. Once the task was complete, Hugh would relax, settle back into his chair and enjoy the music once more. Fond memories of those Sunday mornings.
