HUGH MANSON Obituary

The family announce the passing of Hugh Manson on August 22, 2025, at TBRHSC. Born in Kenora 1927 he moved to Thunder Bay in 1941 attending Port Arthur Tech (Hillcrest), where he excelled academically and in sports. He was proud to have been a former member of the Fort William Rowing Club and competed at the Henley in his younger days. He was also a former member of the Fort William Country Club, Lakehead Search and Rescue and the Take It Easy Curling league of the Fort William Curling Club. He was a veteran and a long-time member of the Port Arthur Legion for over 65 years. He was a former member of FW and PA Kiwanis Clubs. He worked at several optical businesses where he found his vocation and in 1961, he started Fort Optical Co serving the optical needs of our city for the next 27 years. A renaissance man he built his own house on Rankin Street, where he lived for over 60 years. He also built the family camp at Shebandowan. He was happiest when challenged to fix something and he could fix anything. Many winters were spent in Hawaii where mom and dad made many friends. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially the annual trips to Greenwater and never missed the pickerel opening weekend. Predeceased by wife of 63 years Dorothy Bronwen, parents Jack and Fil Manson and brothers George and Jack. Survived by daughter Sandy, sons Bob (Diane), John (Lucille); grandchildren Tug, Tanner and Dana; 6 nieces and 1 nephew. Thanks to the staff at Chartwell Isabella and Paramed PSW's; Dr. Mangatal for the great care and to Dr. Mark Long, Dr. Ron Hrychuk and Greg Stirrett for always being there; St. Joseph's 3rd floor, Rehab. Thanks to MAID for allowing dad to die with dignity. Cremation has taken place. As per his request no service will be held. Interment will be held in the family plot at a later date.

Yesterday

I was very sad to hear about Mr. Manson's passing. He fitted me for and adjusted my glasses when I was a young girl, and later for my son at Fort Optical on Victoria Avenue . I was sorry to have him retire. Hugh was a very sweet and gentle man.
