IAN ROBINSON Obituary

IAN MURDO ROBINSON May 7, 1945 ~ June 2, 2024
It is with broken hearts that the Robinson clan announce the passing of their beloved patriarch Ian Murdo Robinson on June 2, 2024.

Ian was born to Henrietta (Ada) and Claude Robinson in Fort William on May 7, 1945, the day WWII ended.

As a young boy Ian was fascinated with cars and speed, not always in that order. As a young teen he bought an old car engine only to take it apart so he could rebuild making it faster of course. From then on Ian continued his quest for speed building custom hot rods, Harleys, and sleds for ice racing to his current project a Plymouth Savoy drag racer. Ian was awarded many trophies for his custom builds throughout his life. However, Ian's need for speed was not limited to cars and bikes, he also enjoyed downhill speed skiing winning gold skiing down the Jolly at 90 km/hr.

Ian was fortunate to retire at 52 as Company Superintendent at Avenor (Great Lakes Paper) following which Ian enjoyed spending his time on his many interests and hobbies from bow hunting with his own crafted bows, listening to all genres of music from the Stones to Puccini (with the odd air guitar thrown in), home renos (of which there were many), to being a world class chef and wine taster. Ian also loved to travel and spent many winter vacations either visiting his brother in Barbados, going to Mexico, attending Formula 1 and NASCAR races.

Most importantly, Ian was a family man who was honoured to have six fabulous children and ten grandchildren. He is survived by his wife and soulmate of 45 years Donna, his children Michelle (Ray), Susan (Peter), Jennifer (Mark), Jeff (Jaimee), Curt (April) and Lara (Kyle), grandchildren Connor (Charlotte), Evan, Taylor, Aiden, Elliot, Ethan, Aubrey, Kinleigh, Layla, and Beckett. Ian is also survived by his first wife Elaine (Garry), brother Murray, sister-in-law Marilyn (Lorne) and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

As a strong and proud Scotsman Ian beat throat cancer in 1990, however, the intensive radiation treatments left him to deal with a restricted esophagus and artery which eventually lead to a massive stroke in December 2017. Unfortunately the stroke left Ian partially paralyzed nevertheless he was determined to beat the odds and return home which he was able to do by May 2018. With the dedication and support of his wife Donna, Ian was able to remain at home where he continued to defy odds.

Words cannot express our gratitude for the VON nurses and PSW's who made is possible for Ian to remain at home. A special thanks to Karen whose nursing and friendship never went unnoticed. Lastly our family wish to thank the team of Doctors and Nurses of 2N Palliative Care, including Dr. Bassuony, Dr. Migay, Dr. Ward, Dr. Selleck, Nicole, Kathryn, Victoria, Ryan, Nadia, Laurie, Kelsey, Lilli Theresa, Holly, and Neal. Words cannot express the gratitude we have for your outstanding care, compassion, and patience during Ian's final two-week journey, you were a comfort to us all.

As per Ian's wishes cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will take place at a later date.

Ian led a remarkable and well-lived life and with that in mind the family would like to encourage friends to put on some good music and drink at toast in his memory. Slàinte Mhath!

In our larger neighbour hood Ian was part of the group who loved cars and as I recall his gang was involved with racing at the CLE and later at Riverview. Knew his first wife from Church and Murray from Lakehead. Condolences to the Robinson family on Ian´s passing.

Ian and I shared a lot of moments together, most of which should not be shared. My absence from Fort William (TB) for decades did not seem to erode our friendship. When we hooked up some 15 or 20 years ago, I felt like I had come home and those decades away vanished like a puff of smoke. Ian was easy to love and will miss you greatly my friend.

Donna and Family I would like to offer my condolences at this sad time of Ian's passing. Ian and I had somewhat parallel careers at Great Lakes/Avenor and a short stint at Smurfit Stone. Ian will be remembered as a man who believed a proper, thorough and timely way to do things and encouraged those around him to do the same.
