Inge Olsen Obituary

The family of Inge Olsen are deeply saddened to announce her sudden passing on Monday, March 29, 2021 at the age of 87 at TBRHSC.

Inge was born on the family farm in Segalt, Denmark on December 7, 1933. Once her School of Nursing was complete in Denmark, she immigrated to Canada in April, 1957 to join her parents and sister who had immigrated earlier to Port Arthur.

In 1958, at the House of Denmark on Lakeshore Drive, a handsome fellow Dane caught her eye. She married Poul Erik (Paul) on May 23, 1959 and celebrated 61 years of marriage.

Inge had a great work ethic. The majority of her working career was dedicated to employment at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital where she worked for many years as a Registered Practical Nurse retiring in 1996.

In retirement, never to sit idle, she simply enjoyed puttering around her home although her main interest was that of cooking and baking, especially Danish cuisine and desserts. Everyone who was invited to be seated at one of her traditional Danish luncheons could attest that they were nothing short of amazing and absolutely delicious. She excelled at being beyond organized, was an amazing knitter and enjoyed doing Danish crossword puzzles, feeding her feathered and furry friends in her backyard, watching Eagle and Falcon webcams online, volunteering for the Pass Lake Historical Society, attending concerts in the park, shows at the Auditorium and enjoying a Tim's coffee. Inge and Paul also enjoyed frequent travel to Cuba, the USA, Canada and numerous trips back to Denmark.

Inge's greatest joy above all was that of her family. There was nothing she wouldn't do for her family especially her children, grandchildren and grand-dogs. She will be forever missed and loved beyond any words.

Inge will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her husband Paul, her two children, son Dennis (Bernadette) and daughter Elsa (David), granddaughter Dayna, sister Anna Gillis, sister-in-law Inge Gunhild (Denmark), favourite niece Koren and nephew Douglas and their families. Numerous other relatives also survive in Denmark.

Predeceased by her parents, Theodor and Karen Bang, grandson Derek, mother and father-in-law Johannes and Magda, sister-in-law Else Marie and brother-in-law Rudy Gillis, as well as other relatives in Denmark.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to Dr. James Reid as well as Inge's team of Doctors and Health Care Professionals at the TBRHSC for their kindness and care for Inge over the past several months and years.

Cremation has taken place and inurnment was held at Our Lady of Charity Mausoleum privately by the family.

If friends so desire, donations to the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society on Rosslyn Road would be greatly appreciated.

I had the pleasure of working with this wonderful nurse for a few years, when I worked at LPH. We corresponded for many years after I moved to Toronto. I had a lovely visit with her, when I visited Thunder Bay. I always enjoyed reading her newsy letters. She was a treasure, my life was enriched by her friendship. My heartfelt condolences to her family.

I have memories of attending many celebrations with Inge and Paul and all the Danes along with my mom and dad (Lissy and Gunnar) as a teen and a young adult. I miss those times.
Sorry for your loss.

Your mother was a wonderful lady. Although I only knew her from cleaning her home we had many great conversations. She always made sure that I had a chocolate. She will be miss. My deepest condolences to everyone.
