JAMES "JIM" DONALD LESTER
Jim Lester, age 74, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2025, at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital with his daughters by his side.
Born and raised in Geraldton, Ontario and attended Geraldton High School, he began his career in the mining industry in Manitouwadge before transitioning into the trades. Jim worked for many years as Heavy-Duty Mechanic with Kimberly-Clark, where he earned a reputation for his skills and dedication.
At the age of 37, Jim moved his family to Thunder Bay to start a business, Thunder Bay Welding, where he and his brother, Wayne, worked side by side for years. Known for his hard work, ingenuity, and a wide range of talents, Jim was always eager to share his knowledge -- mentoring any worker willing to learn. A creative problem solver, he was always ready to lend a hand, and there was little he couldn't "Jimmy" together to get something working.
Jim was a man of great spirit and endless laughter. He devoted his time and love to those closest to him. A good neighbour, a loyal friend, and above all a devoted family man, he took great pride in his role as a father and later as a proud Papa to his grandchildren.
An avid outdoorsman, Jim loved being in the bush, he could often be found on his trapline, out fishing on the lake, or hunting. He felt most at home in nature, and enjoyed all adventures with friends and family.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, Iris and Donald Lester. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Susan (Lynnia) Lester; his two daughters, Tracy Roblin and Nancy (Kevin) Kuuskivi; and his beloved grandchildren: Madison, Abby, and Tyler Roblin; Konner and Kady Kuuskivi. He is also survived by his brother, Wayne (Debbie) Lester; sisters, Diana Cole, Judy (Blair) Franz, and Ruth Millard; sister-in-law Paula (Dave) Koivisto; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family whom he always held close to his heart.
A Celebration of Life in honour of Jim will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 6:30pm at the Slovak Legion, 801 Atlantic Ave. Friends and family are invited to come together to share memories, with refreshments and a light spread to follow.
In lieu of flowers, Jim's family would like to give back to the trades, a profession that supported him and continues to support his family. Donations in his memory will be used to fund scholarships for youth in Northern Ontario who wish to pursue an education in the trades.
